About the shop
Five carpenters who mostly work on old houses
Nate Fielder started out doing production trim work and got tired of buildings where every corner was square. Most of what we do now is in Grand Rapids homes built before 1940, where nothing is plumb and stock trim will not match. We mill our own profiles when we need to and we photograph and document existing details before removing anything.

Working with us
How long is your lead time?
Typically eight to fourteen weeks from signed bid to install start, because everything is built in the shop first. Small trim and door jobs sometimes fit in sooner. We give you a real calendar date at signing rather than a vague spring or summer.
Do you paint and finish the work?
We spray finish paint grade cabinetry and built ins in the shop, which gives a far better surface than brushing on site. For stained hardwood we finish in the shop too. We do not paint walls or ceilings, and we coordinate with your painter on the final touch up.
How does pricing work?
We bid fixed price, not time and materials, after a site visit and measurements. The bid breaks out material, shop hours and install hours so you can see where money goes. Changes after signing get a written change order before we touch anything.
Can you match trim in a historic home?
Usually. We take a profile off an existing piece, have a knife ground if it is unusual, and run the matching stock ourselves. Knife grinding adds about $250 and two weeks. For common early century profiles we already have the knives on the shelf.
