Therapy for the child, support for the parents
Every child on our caseload has a parent working alongside them. Progress at home is what makes progress in the room stick.
Intake and assessment
A parents only session plus a first play session, followed by a written plan and goals.
Play therapy session, 45 min
Weekly child sessions using nondirective and directive play, sand tray and art.
Parent coaching session
Every fourth session is with parents alone, to translate progress into what happens at home.
School consultation
We attend IEP or 504 meetings and coordinate with teachers when it helps the child.
Sliding scale slots
Reduced fee spots held each term for families paying out of pocket, ask when you call.
About the practice
Rooms built for small people
Blue Kite opened on J Street in 2015 with two playrooms and now has four, each stocked with sand trays, puppets, a dollhouse and art supplies. All four clinicians are licensed in California and are Registered Play Therapists or working toward that credential under supervision. We see children ages three to twelve, and every case includes structured parent involvement.

Parent questions
How does play therapy actually work?
Children do not have the vocabulary or abstraction to talk through feelings the way adults do, but they act them out in play reliably. A trained therapist reads those themes, works within them, and gradually helps the child build new responses. It looks like playing because that is the medium.
Will I know what my child talks about?
You will get regular summaries of themes, progress and what to do at home, and every fourth session is yours. We do not repeat verbatim disclosures, because a child who thinks the room is not private stops using it. Anything involving safety is always shared immediately.
How long does it usually take?
Most children we see attend weekly for four to nine months. Adjustment issues like a move or a new sibling often resolve faster, while trauma and long standing anxiety take longer. You will get an honest estimate after the assessment, not at the first call.
Do you take insurance?
We are in network with Kaiser, Anthem Blue Cross and Sutter plans. For other insurers we provide a monthly superbill for out of network reimbursement. We also hold a set number of sliding scale slots each term, so ask when you call rather than assuming.
