Chimney questions
How often should a chimney be inspected?
Once a year if you burn wood, and before you buy a house with a fireplace. Annual inspection catches creosote buildup, crown cracks and liner damage while they are still cheap fixes.
Why is my chimney leaking when it rains?
In this area it is almost always the crown, the flashing where the chimney meets the roof, or absorbent brick that has lost its mortar. A camera inspection plus a look at the roofline tells us which one within an hour.
Do I need a new liner?
You need one if the clay tiles are cracked or spalled, if you added a gas or wood insert sized differently than the original flue, or if there is no liner at all, which is common in Pittsburgh homes built before 1940.
How long does a rebuild take?
A crown repair is a single day. Repointing takes one to two days. A partial rebuild above the roofline usually runs two to four days, weather permitting. We do not start masonry when overnight temperatures drop below freezing.
