Level five finish

Nate Sturgis started taping for other contractors in 2004 and went out on his own in 2010. Hanging board is the easy part, and the difference between a decent wall and a great one is the third coat and the sanding. All four crews are employees, and the same finisher who tapes your house does the final sand.

Questions about drywall work
What is a level five finish and do I need it?
Level five adds a full skim coat over the whole surface, not just the seams. You want it on walls with gloss or semi gloss paint, or where side light from big windows will rake across the wall. For standard rooms with flat paint, level four is fine and costs less.
How long does a house take?
For a typical 2,400 square foot home, hanging takes two days, taping and coating four to five days with drying time between coats, then sanding and touch up. Plan on eight to ten working days total, longer in humid weather.
How much dust will there be?
Sanding creates fine dust, so we seal off the work area, cover HVAC returns, and use vacuum assisted sanders. There will still be some dust. We do a full cleanup and haul off scrap, but a final wipe down before painting is always a good idea.
Why do cracks come back after a repair?
Most recurring cracks are movement, not bad taping. Truss uplift, settling, and seasonal humidity all move framing. We use paper tape and, where movement is likely, a control detail. If a crack we repaired returns within a year we come back at no charge.
