About Chalkline
Built with teachers, tested by someone else
Chalkline started in 2015 from a University of Michigan education research group and is now used in 1,400 schools. Content is written by former classroom teachers and reviewed against state standards each summer. We commissioned an independent efficacy study rather than publishing our own, because a vendor grading its own homework is not evidence.

Pilots, data and classroom fit
How does the free pilot work?
Up to three classrooms get the full platform for one semester with the same support paid schools receive, including professional development and rostering. At the end you get a report on your own students' growth. There is no obligation and no automatic conversion to a paid license.
How much class time does this take?
Twenty minutes a day, three to five days a week, is where we see the growth in the research. Most schools run it during an intervention or WIN block rather than replacing core instruction. The diagnostic takes about forty minutes once at the start and is repeated mid year and at year end.
What happens to student data?
Student data is used to run the product and nothing else. We sign a district data privacy agreement, we are a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge, and we never sell data or use it for advertising. Districts can request full export or deletion at any time and we complete those within thirty days.
Does it replace the teacher?
No, and it is designed on the assumption that it should not. The adaptive practice handles repetition and diagnosis, which are the parts that scale poorly with thirty students. What it gives the teacher back is a clear picture of who is stuck on what, so small group instruction targets something real.
