Started by two teachers and a data engineer
Slate & Signal came out of a middle school in San Antonio where the founders were hand sorting exit tickets into piles at 4pm every day. The product does that sorting, and only that, because tools which try to be the whole curriculum get abandoned by March. Districts own their data and can export it in full at any time.

Questions from schools and districts
How does this fit with our existing curriculum?
It sits on top of whatever you already use rather than replacing it. Teachers pick a standard or a lesson objective and the item bank surfaces matching checks. Schools using Illustrative Mathematics, Eureka, and Big Ideas all run it without changing their scope and sequence.
What happens to student data?
The district remains the data owner and can export everything or request deletion at any time. We collect only what rostering requires, which is name, student identifier, and class assignment, and we do not sell or share it. Our data practices are documented for your privacy officer before signing.
How much training does a teacher need?
Most teachers run their first check within twenty minutes of logging in without training. Coach onboarding exists for schools that want a consistent rollout across a building, but it is optional. We deliberately kept the feature surface small so there is not much to learn.
Can we try it before committing budget?
Yes, the spring pilot covers one grade level for a semester at no cost and does not need a purchase order. Most districts pilot in spring and buy for the following school year. If it does not stick with your teachers, nothing rolls over.
