About the shelter

Low barrier because barriers leave people outside

Cedar Street opened in 2007 in a former warehouse. We run low barrier, which means sobriety is not a condition of getting a bed and we do not turn away people whose partner or dog would otherwise be left outside. Rules exist for safety, not for behavior we disapprove of. We are funded by county contracts and private donors.

•Sobriety is not required for a bed
•Couples stay together and pets are welcome
•Locked storage so belongings are not a reason to sleep outside
•Case managers assigned within 72 hours of first night

Reviews

Guests and partners

“Every other place made me choose between my dog and a roof. Here they had a kennel by the bed.”

Wayne T., Former guest

“My caseworker sat on hold with the housing authority for two hours so I did not lose my place in line.”

Angel R., Housed in 2025

“As an ER social worker I can call at 9pm and get a straight answer about capacity. That matters at discharge.”

FAQ

Questions about the shelter

How do I get a bed?

Come to the Cedar Street door between 4pm and 9pm. Intake takes about fifteen minutes and does not require identification. Beds are first come during that window, and if we are full we will call around the county and tell you exactly where there is space tonight.

Can I stay if I have been drinking or using?

Yes. We are a low barrier shelter, so being under the influence is not a reason to be turned away. Using on the property is not allowed and violence toward anyone is not tolerated, but we are not going to send someone into the cold over sobriety.

What should we donate?

Funds are the most useful because they cover staffing, which is our largest cost and the hardest to fund. For goods, the constant needs are new socks and underwear, sleeping bags, hygiene kits, and bus passes. Please call before bringing large furniture, since our storage is limited.

How can I volunteer?

Evening meal service, laundry, and donation sorting are the regular shifts, and all of them are three hours. Volunteers working directly with guests complete a background check and a two hour orientation covering trauma informed practice. Groups should book at least three weeks ahead.
