Every teacher at Harborline performs or records in Maine, and most hold a degree in music or education. We match students to a teacher after a short conversation about goals, because a student who wants to play Nirvana and a student preparing a conservatory audition do not need the same person.

Getting started
What age should a child start lessons?
Five to seven works well for piano and violin, where small hands are manageable. Guitar and drums usually go better at seven or eight because of physical size. If you are unsure, book a trial and the teacher will tell you honestly.
Do we need to own an instrument first?
Not to start. We rent student violins, guitars and keyboards from $28 a month and the rent applies toward purchase. Drummers can practice on a pad at home for the first few months.
How much practice is expected?
Twenty minutes on five days beats two hours on Sunday. Beginners often start at ten minutes daily. Teachers write the week's practice assignment in a notebook so nobody is guessing at home.
What happens if we miss a lesson?
With 24 hours notice we issue a makeup credit you can use in the same or following month. Same day cancellations cannot be credited because the teacher's time is already reserved.
