Khao soi
Northern curry noodle soup with braised chicken, crispy noodles, pickled mustard greens.
Northern Thai cooking from Chiang Rai, with khao soi, sai ua sausage, and a spice scale where Thai hot actually means Thai hot.
Spice levels run one to five. Level four is where most Thai guests land.
Northern curry noodle soup with braised chicken, crispy noodles, pickled mustard greens.
House made with lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime, grilled to order.
Paste pounded that morning, coconut milk, Thai eggplant, sweet basil.
Wide rice noodles charred in a hot wok, not soggy, with Chinese broccoli.
Minced pork with toasted rice powder, lime, mint, and plenty of chili.
Available when the mangoes are actually good, roughly March through August.
Sompong opened on Franklin Boulevard in 2009 after the family moved from Chiang Rai. The mortar and pestle in the back kitchen gets used every morning, which is the single biggest reason our curries taste different from most Thai restaurants in town. The menu stays small so nothing sits.
“The khao soi is the reason I drive from Davis. Crispy noodles on top are still crispy when it hits the table.”
Peter H., Davis
“I asked for level five and they asked twice if I was sure. They were right to ask and I finished it anyway.”
Marisol G., spice level five
“My mother is from Lampang and she said the sai ua tastes like home. That is the highest review I can pass along.”
Nok C., Sacramento
Level five uses fresh bird's eye chilies in the amount a kitchen in Chiang Rai would use, which surprises most first timers. Level three is medium by American standards and level four is where most of our Thai guests order. You can always add chili at the table, so start lower on your first visit.
Most can. We keep a separate wok and use a mushroom based sauce in place of fish sauce, and the curry pastes for vegetarian orders are made without shrimp paste. Say vegan rather than no meat when ordering so the kitchen uses the right paste batch.
We can cook without peanuts and without soy sauce containing wheat, but this is a small kitchen where peanuts are used daily. For a severe airborne or cross contact allergy we will tell you honestly that we cannot guarantee separation. Please mention allergies when you order, not on arrival.
Fried noodles travel reasonably well if you eat within twenty minutes and leave the container lid cracked so steam escapes. Khao soi goes out with the crispy noodles in a separate bag for the same reason. Curries and soups actually travel best of anything on the menu.
Pickup orders are usually ready in fifteen to twenty minutes. Larger parties should call rather than order online so the kitchen can pace it.
