"Free domain" offers fall into three kinds: a free subdomain on a builder's address (free for as long as you use the plan), a custom domain included free for the first year with an annual paid plan, and one-cent or one-dollar first-year promotions. The last two renew at normal prices from year two. Here is what each one costs once the offer ends. </p>

<h2>1. A free subdomain: genuinely free</h2> <p>Most website builders let you publish on their own address at no cost. <h2>2. A custom domain free for the first year</h2> <p>Several builders include a domain free for the first year when you pay annually. As of September 28, 2026, <a href="https://www.squarespace.com/pricing" rel="nofollow noopener">Squarespace</a> listed a free domain for one year with annual plans (Basic from $12 a month billed annually), <a href="https://www.wix.com/plans" rel="nofollow noopener">Wix</a> listed a "free domain for 1 year" on its yearly premium plans, and <a href="https://www.hostinger.com/website-builder" rel="nofollow noopener">Hostinger</a> listed a free domain for one year on its website builder plans (Premium $2.99 a month on a 48-month term, renewing at $10.99 a month).</p> <p>The domain is not the free part here; the plan is what you are paying for. From year two the domain renews at that company's price, which we could not read for Squarespace or Wix on the day, so check it in your account before the first renewal. If the renewal is high, you can transfer the domain to a cheaper registrar and keep it pointed at the same site.</p>
<h2>3. One-cent and one-dollar promotions</h2> <p>Registrars and hosts often discount the first year heavily. On September 28, 2026, <a href="https://www.hostinger.com/domain-name-search" rel="nofollow noopener">Hostinger</a> showed a .com at $0.01 for the first year and $19.99 at renewal, and <a href="https://www.ionos.com/domains/domain-names" rel="nofollow noopener">IONOS</a> showed $1 for the first year with $20 as the regular price (its renewal price was not stated on the page). Flat-priced registrars charged about the same every year: <a href="https://porkbun.com/products/domains" rel="nofollow noopener">Porkbun</a> $11.08 and <a href="https://www.dynadot.com/domain/com" rel="nofollow noopener">Dynadot</a> $10.88.</p>

The gap is small in dollars, but it grows every year you keep the domain. <h2>What about truly free domain endings?</h2> <p>Free-of-charge top-level domains have come and gone over the years, and some were withdrawn or reclaimed from their users. For a business, a free ending you do not control is a risk to your address, email and search presence. A standard .com or country ending at around $11 a year is cheap insurance.</p>
