How Microsoft Copilot Uses Bing for Local Answers | How-to Guide

Why Microsoft Copilot's answers about local businesses depend on Bing, what Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places control, and the checks a small business should run so Copilot gets its details right.

When someone asks Microsoft Copilot for a dentist nearby or a quote range for a fence, Copilot grounds its answer in Bing search results. That makes Bing the part you can influence. A business that is invisible or out of date on Bing tends to be invisible or wrong in Copilot too.

The chain behind a Copilot answer

Microsoft describes Copilot's web answers as grounded in Bing: Copilot turns the question into searches, reads the results Bing returns and writes a reply with linked citations. For place questions, Bing's local data comes largely from Bing Places for Business and from the wider web. Microsoft's Bing Webmaster Guidelines apply to the pages it chooses from. There is no separate Copilot submission form.

So three things decide whether your business appears: is your site in Bing's index, does Bing Places hold accurate details about you, and do other sites Bing trusts describe you consistently?

Step 1: get your site into Bing properly

Create a free Bing Webmaster Tools account and verify your site. If you already use Google Search Console, Bing lets you import the verified site from it in a few clicks. Then:

  • Submit your sitemap so Bing knows every page you want found.
  • Use the URL Inspection tool on your main service pages to confirm they are indexed.
  • Check robots.txt allows Bingbot. Blocking it removes you from the source Copilot reads.
  • Consider IndexNow, a protocol Bing supports that pings search engines when a page is added or changed, so updates are picked up sooner.

Step 2: claim Bing Places for Business

Bing Places is Microsoft's listing service for local businesses. You can import an existing Google Business Profile, which saves typing, but review every field after the import. Hours, categories, service areas and the phone number are what Copilot is most likely to repeat. Holiday hours are worth updating here as well as on Google, because people use Copilot inside Windows and Edge without ever opening Google.

Step 3: make your pages quotable

Copilot cites pages that answer the question asked. A page that says "We repair composite and timber fences in Leicester, most jobs take one day, typical panel replacement starts at" followed by a real price is usable. A page of slogans is not. Keep prices, areas and opening times in plain text in the HTML, since a crawler that does not wait for scripts may miss text added later by JavaScript.

Step 4: check what Copilot says

Ask Copilot the questions customers ask, including your business name with your town. Read the citations. If a wrong phone number appears, follow the link to see which source it came from, then fix that source: your own site, Bing Places, or a directory. Bing Webmaster Tools also has an AI Performance report, launched as a public preview in February 2026, that counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and in AI-generated summaries on Bing.

What Bing says not to do

The Bing Webmaster Guidelines list familiar abuses: cloaking, link schemes, keyword stuffing and scraped content, including lightly reworded copies. They also say that content designed to manipulate or interfere with the language models used by Bing or Copilot can lead to reduced visibility or removal. A small business gains nothing from tricks and risks its index presence.

The short version

Treat Bing as a second search engine worth an hour of setup, then keep feeding it pages that answer real questions. The same pages serve Google, and Copilot benefits as a side effect.

Those weekly pages are the part SEO God Mode helps with on We.Inc sites, drafting from your own services and facts so the copy Copilot reads is accurate.
