localhost:8090: Confluence and Other Port 8090 Servers
Port 8090 is best known as Atlassian Confluence's default HTTP port, so a fresh install opens its setup wizard at http://localhost:8090. Developers also pick 8090 as a spare when 8080 is taken. If the page refuses to connect, Confluence is still starting, has failed, or another process already holds the port.
| Port | Purpose | File |
|---|---|---|
| 8090 | HTTP for the web UI | conf/server.xml Connector |
| 8000 | Tomcat shutdown port | conf/server.xml Server |
| 8091 | Synchrony collaborative editing | Synchrony settings |
Updated
Confluence runs on its own bundled Tomcat, and startup takes minutes on a small machine. During that time the port may refuse connections or show a progress page; that is normal and not a sign that the install failed.

Internal wiki or public site
Confluence is meant for internal documentation behind a login. Public pages that customers read, such as a help centre or a company site, are usually better on a public host. We.Inc can publish that public site while the team wiki stays where it is.
How it works
- Start Confluence with the service or bin/start-confluence.sh.
- Watch logs/catalina.out until the startup finishes.
- Open http://localhost:8090 and continue the setup or sign in.
- If startup fails, find which process holds 8090 or 8000.
Tips
- Confluence's shutdown port defaults to 8000, so a Django or Laravel dev server on 8000 can stop Confluence from starting.
- After changing the port, update the Server Base URL in general configuration so links and emails use the new address.
- Behind a reverse proxy, set proxyName, proxyPort and scheme on the connector so Confluence builds correct links.
