How it works
- Type the invoice date, which is normally the date printed on the invoice, not the date the work started.
- Choose the payment terms. Net 30 means payment is due 30 calendar days after the invoice date. EOM means the end of the invoice month.
- Optionally tick the weekend option to move a due date that lands on a Saturday or Sunday to the following Monday.
- Read the due date and copy it onto the invoice, so the client sees a date instead of having to count days.
How payment terms are counted
Most terms are counted in calendar days from the invoice date. The invoice date itself is day zero, so Net 15 on an invoice dated June 1 means June 16. Months do not matter for Net terms: Net 30 from January 31 is March 2 in a normal year, not February 28, because February is short.
End of month terms work differently. Plain EOM ignores the day of the month and jumps to the last day of the invoice month. Net 30 EOM first jumps to the month end and then adds 30 days, which is popular with businesses that pay all their bills in one monthly run.
Choosing terms that get you paid
Long terms are effectively a loan to your client. If you are a small studio or freelancer, Net 60 or Net 90 can leave you paying your own bills before money arrives. Many small businesses ask for a deposit up front and short terms on the balance for exactly this reason.
Whatever you choose, be consistent. Put the terms in the quote, the contract and every invoice, and print the calculated due date beside them. A client who sees a clear date in their own diary is far less likely to pay late than one who has to work it out.
Tips
- Print the actual due date on the invoice, not just Net 30. Clients pay against dates, and a written date removes any argument about when the clock started.
- Send the invoice the day the work is delivered. Every day you wait pushes the due date out by a day.
- Shorter terms such as Net 7 or Net 15 are common for freelancers and small jobs. Larger companies often insist on Net 30 or longer, so agree terms before you start.
- If a due date falls on a weekend, decide in your terms whether it moves to Monday, and say so on the invoice.
- Put a reminder in your calendar a few days before the due date, then again the day after if nothing arrives.
Frequently asked questions
What does Net 30 mean?
Net 30 means the full amount is due 30 calendar days after the invoice date. Weekends and holidays count as days. An invoice dated March 1 on Net 30 terms is due March 31.
What does EOM mean on an invoice?
EOM stands for end of month. Payment is due on the last day of the month the invoice is dated in. An invoice dated April 10 with EOM terms is due April 30.
What is Net 30 EOM?
Net 30 EOM means you count 30 days from the end of the invoice month rather than from the invoice date. An invoice dated January 10 counts from January 31, so it is due 30 days later on March 2 in a non-leap year.
Does Net 30 mean 30 business days?
No. Unless your contract says business days, Net terms count calendar days. If you want business days, write it out in full in your terms so nobody is surprised.
Is this calculator legal advice about payment terms?
No. It only does the date arithmetic. What terms you can set, and what happens when a payment is late, depend on your contract and local rules, so check those or ask an accountant or lawyer.
