How Small Businesses Show Up in Google AI Overviews | How-to Guide
What Google says about appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, what that means for a small business site, and the practical changes that help: indexable pages, direct answers, real expertise, and snippet controls.
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode summarise an answer and link to the pages they drew from. Being one of those links is the new version of ranking for a question. The good news for small businesses: Google says there is nothing special to add. The same pages that deserve to rank are the ones it cites.
What Google has said
Google's guidance for site owners is that there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special markup or AI text files are needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. Beyond that, the usual advice applies: helpful, reliable, people-first content, a good page experience, and text that is visible on the page.
1. Make sure the page can be shown at all
- It is indexed (check with URL Inspection in Search Console).
- It does not use
nosnippetor a very smallmax-snippet, which also limit use in AI features. - The important text is in the HTML, not only in images or late-loading scripts.
2. Answer the question in the first lines
Overviews tend to cite passages that answer directly. Start a page with the answer ("A boiler service usually takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs between..."), then explain. Use clear headings that match how people ask.
3. Add what only you know
An overview already summarises the general web. A page that repeats the general web gives Google no reason to cite it. Add your prices, your local conditions, what you see go wrong, photos of your own work. First-hand detail is what makes a page worth linking from a summary.
4. Cover the follow-up questions
AI Mode in particular answers follow-ups by searching for several related questions at once. A set of pages that each answer one related question well (cost, timing, what is included, how to choose) gives you more chances to be one of the sources.
5. Keep local facts accurate
For local questions, AI answers also draw on Business Profile data. Hours, services and categories there should be complete and match your site.
How to tell if it is working
Search Console includes AI feature appearances in its normal Performance report rather than separately, so watch impressions and clicks for the question-style queries your new pages target.
A worked example: a boiler engineer
Say someone searches "how often should a boiler be serviced". An overview will summarise the general advice, usually once a year, and cite a few pages. A national energy site will almost certainly be one. The local engineer's page has a chance when it adds what the national page cannot: that many manufacturers require an annual service to keep the warranty valid, what the engineer actually checks in a service, how long it takes, what it costs in that town, and the faults they most often find in older boilers. That page answers the follow-up questions too, which is exactly what AI Mode goes looking for.
Mistakes that keep pages out of AI answers
- Key information only inside images, sliders or PDFs.
- Pages that open with a long story before the answer appears.
- Thin service pages that list a service name and a phone number and nothing else.
- Blocking Googlebot from CSS or JavaScript the page needs to show its text.
- Copying the same text across many location pages, which makes none of them a strong source.
For We.Inc sites, SEO God Mode drafts one or two of these direct-answer pages a week from your own services, and publishes each only after you approve it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says no special markup or AI text files are needed. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in normal Search.
Can nosnippet stop my page appearing in AI Overviews?
Yes. nosnippet and restrictive max-snippet settings limit how Google can show your content, including in AI features.
Where do I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?
