How to Add Hotjar to Your Website

Hotjar gives every site its own tracking code, found next to the site on the Sites & Organizations page. Paste it into the head of each page you want recorded, or use Hotjar's WordPress plugin. Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, and pricing lives on Contentsquare's site, which lists a free plan.

Hotjar is known for heatmaps, recordings and on-page feedback widgets and surveys. The surveys are what set it apart from free recorders: you can ask visitors on a pricing page why they hesitated, right next to the recording of what they did.

Add Hotjar on We.Inc, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or plain HTML

We.Inc

  1. Copy your Hotjar site's tracking code.
  2. Hotjar is not an add-on, so tell the AI chat: "add this Hotjar tracking code to the head of every page" and paste it.
  3. Check the preview, then publish the site.
  4. Run Hotjar's installation check against your live address.

Edits made through the AI chat use credits on a paid plan.

WordPress

  1. Go to Plugins, Add Plugin and search for Hotjar.
  2. Install and activate Hotjar's plugin.
  3. Follow the plugin's setup screen to link your Hotjar site, then load a page to test.

Plugins on WordPress.com require a paid plan.

Wix

  1. In the dashboard click Settings, then Custom Code.
  2. Select + Add Custom Code and paste the Hotjar snippet.
  3. Set All pages, place it in Head, and click Apply.

Wix runs custom code only on published sites with a connected domain.

Squarespace

  1. Open Code Injection from the Custom Code section of the Pages panel.
  2. Paste the snippet into Header and save.

You need the Core, Plus or Advanced plan for Code Injection.

Plain HTML

  1. Paste the snippet inside <head> on each page you want tracked.
  2. Upload the pages.
  3. Visit the site, then confirm in Hotjar that data is arriving.

What the Contentsquare move changed

Hotjar's pricing page now redirects to Contentsquare, and sign-in goes through Contentsquare too. The tracking code still works the same way: one snippet per site, pasted into the head.

On the free plan, when the monthly session limit is reached, new heatmap and funnel data stops until the month resets.

Consent and privacy

Recordings rely on non-essential tracking, so in the EU and UK ask for consent before Hotjar loads; /guides/how-to-add-cookie-banner-to-website covers banners. Add Hotjar to your privacy policy as well.

How it works

  1. Sign in and add your site so it gets its own tracking code.
  2. Copy the code from the install option on the Sites & Organizations page.
  3. Paste it into the <head> of every page you want to track.
  4. Load the live site and use Hotjar's installation check to confirm.

Tips

  • Use the WordPress plugin rather than pasting into a theme file; theme updates wipe edited files.
  • Exclude your own visits by testing in a separate browser profile, or recordings fill with your QA sessions.
  • Put a one-question survey on the page with the highest exit rate before you redesign it.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my Hotjar tracking code?

On the Sites & Organizations page, each site has an install option that reveals its unique snippet. Each site you add gets a different code.

Is Hotjar free?

There is a free plan, now listed on Contentsquare's pricing page, with monthly session caps and one month of data. Paid plans raise those limits.

Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity?

Clarity is free with no paid tier and covers recordings and heatmaps. Hotjar adds surveys and feedback widgets. Many small sites start with Clarity and add Hotjar when they want to ask visitors questions.
