How to Add a WhatsApp Button to Your Website
A WhatsApp button is just a link to https://wa.me/ followed by your number in international format, with no plus, spaces, dashes or leading zero. Add ?text= with an encoded message to pre-fill it. Style that link as a fixed circle in a corner and you have a floating button, no script needed.
| Written as | Use in the link |
|---|---|
| +1 (555) 123-4567 | 15551234567 |
| +44 07700 900123 | 447700900123 |
| +92 300 1234567 | 923001234567 |

Unlike the chat widgets on this site, a WhatsApp button loads nothing from a third party until someone taps it. On a phone it opens the WhatsApp app; on a computer it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. The conversation then lives in your WhatsApp, not on your website.
Add a WhatsApp button on We.Inc, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or plain HTML
We.Inc
- In the AI chat, describe the button: where it sits, your number and any pre-filled text.
- Check the preview on the phone view as well as desktop.
- Publish the site.
Not an add-on; the AI writes it into the site. Chat edits use credits on a paid plan.
WordPress
- Add a Button block where you want it and set its link to your wa.me URL.
- For a floating button, add the HTML from the example below in a Custom HTML block or your theme footer.
- Update the page and test on a phone.
Plain links work on any WordPress.com plan; footer code in the theme needs a plugin-enabled plan.
Wix
- Add a button or icon from Add Elements.
- Open its link settings, choose Web Address and paste the wa.me link.
- Pin it to the screen if you want it to float, then publish.
Squarespace
- Add a Button block to the page.
- Set its link to your wa.me URL.
- For a sitewide floating button, paste the example HTML into the Footer field of Code Injection.
Button links work on every plan; Code Injection needs Core or higher.
Plain HTML
- Paste the example link before </body>.
- Replace the number and message.
- Upload and tap it on a phone.

Swap the word Chat for an icon if you like. The %2C and %20 are an encoded comma and space.

Personal number or Business app
The link works with any WhatsApp number, but a public button will bring messages from strangers. The free WhatsApp Business app adds a business profile, away messages and quick replies, and keeps those chats off your personal account.
Because the number is visible in the link, expect some spam. A dedicated business number is easier to change later than your own.
How it works
- Write your number in full international format and strip every symbol.
- Add an optional pre-filled message, URL-encoded, after ?text=.
- Put the link on a button, an icon or a fixed floating circle.
- Tap it on a phone and on a computer to check both open the chat.
Tips
- Pre-fill the message with the page name, for example "Hi, I'm asking about the kitchen quote", so you know where the lead came from.
- Keep the floating button clear of cookie banners and the iPhone home bar; 20px from the bottom and side is a safe start.
- Give the link an aria-label such as "Chat on WhatsApp" because an icon alone says nothing to screen readers.
- Our WhatsApp link generator builds and encodes the link for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the WhatsApp click-to-chat link format?
https://wa.me/ plus the full number with country code and no plus sign, spaces, brackets, dashes or leading zeros. Example: https://wa.me/15551234567?text=Hello.
Do I need a plugin for a WhatsApp floating button?
No. A styled link does the job and loads nothing extra. Plugins add schedules, multiple agents or analytics, which a single-number site rarely needs.
Does the button work on desktop?
Yes. On a computer, wa.me opens a page that hands off to WhatsApp Desktop or WhatsApp Web, where the visitor may need to link their phone first.
How do I add one on We.Inc?
Ask the AI chat, for example "add a floating WhatsApp button bottom right linking to 15551234567". There is no WhatsApp add-on; the AI adds the button to the site code.
