How to Add tawk.to Live Chat to Your Website

Log in to tawk.to, pick the property, then go to Administration and Chat Widget and copy the Widget Code. Paste it right before the closing body tag. tawk.to chat is free as long as "Powered by tawk.to" stays visible; on We.Inc there is no add-on, so ask the AI chat to add it.

tawk.to's model is unusual: the software is free and the company earns from branding removal, AI and staffing. For a small business that just wants someone to be able to message them, that removes the seat-count maths every other widget makes you do.

Add tawk.to on We.Inc, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or plain HTML

We.Inc

  1. Copy your Widget Code from tawk.to.
  2. In the builder's AI chat, write: "Add this tawk.to chat widget to every page" and paste the code.
  3. Look at the preview, then Publish.

tawk.to is not in the Add-ons list. AI chat edits use credits on a paid plan.

WordPress

  1. Install the tawk.to plugin from Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
  2. Activate it and sign in to tawk.to from the plugin's settings.
  3. Choose the property and widget, then save.

WordPress.com needs a plugin-capable plan (Personal or higher).

Wix

  1. Open Settings and then Custom Code.
  2. Paste the widget code, choose All pages and Body - end.
  3. Apply and publish.

tawk.to also links a dedicated Wix guide from its help article. Custom Code requires a premium plan with a connected domain.

Squarespace

  1. Open Code Injection.
  2. Put the widget code in the Footer box.
  3. Save, then view the live site.

Requires a plan with Code Injection (Core or above).

Plain HTML

  1. Open each page or your footer include.
  2. Paste the code directly above </body>.
  3. Upload and refresh the live page.

Properties and widgets

tawk.to calls each website a property. Every property has its own widget code, and its own settings for colours, greeting and availability. Copy the code from the property that matches the site, or chats from two businesses end up in one queue.

If your site sends a Content Security Policy header and the widget stays invisible, the browser console will show which tawk.to domains were refused. Add them to the policy.

How it works

  1. Create a property for the site in tawk.to.
  2. Copy its Widget Code from Administration, Chat Widget.
  3. Paste it before </body>, or use the platform's tawk.to integration.
  4. Publish and check the live site in a private window.

Tips

  • tawk.to's own install steps are written for a desktop browser; the dashboard is easier there than on a phone.
  • Set your offline message before launch so visitors outside your hours can still leave an email.
  • Install the tawk.to mobile app and test a notification; a free tool is only useful if someone sees the message.
