How to Change Your Favicon on Any Website Builder

To change a favicon, upload a new square image in your builder's site settings, then publish. Webflow, Squarespace, Wix, Shopify and WordPress each have their own icon field; on a hand-built site you replace the file and the link rel=icon tag. Browsers and Google cache icons, so the old one can linger.

Updated

Find your builder below. Each set of steps is taken from that builder's own help page. If you run a hand-coded site, the last card writes the link tags for you. Make the icon first with our favicon generator if you do not have one yet.

Steps for your builder

Webflow

  1. Open your site's settings and find the favicon or site icon field.
  2. Upload one square image.
  3. Save, then publish the site so the new icon goes live.

Webflow's help page was not readable when we checked, so follow the labels in your own dashboard for the exact menu names and sizes.

Squarespace

  1. Open the Favicon panel.
  2. Drag your image into the uploader, or click it to pick a file.
  3. Optionally add a dark mode version (only after a default favicon is set).
  4. Click Save.

The help page suggests 100x100 to 300x300 pixels, .png files, and no more than 100 KB.

Wix

  1. Go to Settings in your site's dashboard.
  2. Click Website settings.
  3. Click Upload Image under Favicon.
  4. Choose your file.

Needs a Premium plan, a connected domain and a published site. The image must be a multiple of 48 px square unless it is an SVG.

Shopify

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. Find your theme and click Edit theme.
  3. Click the Theme settings icon, then Logo or Favicon depending on your theme.
  4. Under Favicon image click Select image, pick or add the image, then click Done.
  5. Click Save.

Shopify calls 16x16 or 32x32 px the ideal size. Not available on the Starter plan.

WordPress

  1. Upload a square image of at least 512 px to the Media Library.
  2. Go to Settings, then General.
  3. Click Choose a Site icon.
  4. Select the image you uploaded.

Before version 6.5 the setting was under Appearance, Customize, Site Identity.

Hand-built site (HTML)

Upload favicon.ico, icon.png (at least 48x48) and apple-touch-icon.png (180x180) to that folder first.

Code example

An SVG favicon that switches in dark mode

Save the SVG as icon.svg. The style block inside it changes the fill when the visitor's system is in dark mode. Keep a favicon.ico too, since not every browser reads SVG icons.

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 48 48">
  <style>
    rect { fill: #1d4ed8; }
    @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { rect { fill: #93c5fd; } }
  </style>
  <rect width="48" height="48" rx="10"/>
</svg>

What Google needs before it shows your icon

Google reads the link tag in your home page's head. It supports rel values of icon, shortcut icon, apple-touch-icon and apple-touch-icon-precomposed, and accepts formats including ICO, PNG, GIF and JPEG.

Google shows one favicon per hostname. A subdomain such as shop.example.com can have its own, but a folder such as example.com/shop cannot.

When the builder setting is missing

If your plan hides the favicon field, upgrading is usually the only route on hosted builders, because you cannot edit the head of the page yourself. On self-hosted sites you can always add the link tag by hand.

How it works

  1. Find your builder in the list and follow its steps, noting any plan rules.
  2. For a hand-built site, type the folder that holds your icon files to get the link tags.
  3. Upload or paste, publish your site, then open it in a private window to see the new icon.
  4. Leave Google time to recrawl. Its favicon help says this can take from several days to several weeks.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google still show my old favicon?

Google picks up a new favicon when it recrawls your home page, which its help page says can take several days to several weeks. You can ask for a faster recrawl by requesting indexing of the home page in the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.

Why does my browser still show the old icon?

Browsers keep favicons in their cache for a long time. Squarespace's help page suggests clearing your browser cache and restarting the browser. Opening the site in a private window is a quick check that the new icon is really live.

Can I add a favicon on Shopify's Starter plan or a free Wix site?

Not as of October 2026. Shopify's help page says the Starter plan cannot add a favicon. Wix requires a Premium plan and a connected domain, and you need to publish the site first.

Can I have a different favicon in dark mode?

On some builders, yes. Squarespace lets you upload a dark mode version after setting the default icon. On a hand-built site you can point to an SVG icon that changes colour with a prefers-color-scheme media query inside the SVG.
