What is Black Hat SEO?

Black hat SEO means trying to rank by tricking search engines with tactics that break their spam policies, such as cloaking, hidden text and bought links.

Black hat SEO is any attempt to push a site up the search results by deceiving the search engine rather than by being the better answer. The tactics break Google's published spam policies. They sometimes produce a short-lived jump in rankings, and they can also get a site demoted or removed from Google entirely.

The tactics Google names as spam

Google publishes its spam policies, and most black hat methods map directly onto them:

  • Cloaking: showing crawlers one version of a page and visitors another.
  • Hidden text and links: white text on a white background, or links shrunk to a single pixel.
  • Keyword stuffing: repeating a phrase unnaturally, or pasting lists of towns into a footer.
  • Link spam: buying links that pass ranking credit, private blog networks, or automated link exchanges.
  • Doorway pages: many near-identical pages built to catch slight keyword variations and funnel people to one place.
  • Scaled content abuse: mass-producing pages, by hand or with AI, mainly to rank rather than to help.
  • Expired domain abuse and site reputation abuse: buying an old domain or renting a section of a trusted site to borrow its standing. Google added both to its policies in 2024.

How sites get caught

Two routes. Automated systems, including the one Google calls SpamBrain, detect patterns and quietly discount or demote pages. Human reviewers issue manual actions, which appear in the Manual actions report of Google Search Console with a description of the problem. Fixing it and filing a reconsideration request can lift a manual action, though recovery takes time.

A typical small-business trap

An electrician is offered "200 high-authority backlinks" for a small monthly fee. The links come from unrelated, low-quality sites built for selling links. Google may simply ignore them, in which case the money is wasted, or treat them as a link scheme and penalise the site. Neither outcome brings in a single extra customer.

Why it matters to you

Most owners never set out to cheat. The risk comes from agencies and freelancers who do it on your behalf, so ask how any promised result will be achieved. If the answer involves link packages, hundreds of city pages with the same text, or anything they would rather not explain, walk away.

Mistakes owners make around black hat SEO

  • Judging by short-term results. A ranking spike from spam often reverses after the next update.
  • Not checking Search Console. A manual action can sit unnoticed for months.
  • Assuming AI content is the problem in itself. Google targets the purpose and quality, not the tool.
  • Disavowing everything in a panic. The disavow tool is for clear link schemes, not every odd link.
