Wi-Fi QR Code Text Generator
Type your network name, security type and password to get the exact WIFI: text that phones read from a QR code. Paste it into any QR code generator, print the code at your counter, front desk or rental, and guests join your Wi-Fi by pointing their camera at it instead of typing a long password.
What you enter
- Network name (SSID)
- Security
- Password
- Hidden network
How it works
- Enter the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in the list of networks, including capitals and spaces.
- Choose the security type your router uses and type the password. Open networks need no password.
- Tick 'Hidden network' only if your router does not broadcast its name.
- Copy the text and paste it into a QR code generator as plain text, then test the printed code with two different phones.
Why codes that look right sometimes fail
The most common failure is a special character in the password that was not escaped. A password such as coffee;tea looks fine on a sign, but without the backslash the phone reads the semicolon as the end of the password and tries to join with just 'coffee'. The generator escapes these characters for you, which is the main reason to build the text here instead of typing it by hand.
The second cause is a network name that does not match. Many routers show a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network with slightly different names, such as Shop and Shop-5G. The code joins only the name you type, so pick the one with the better signal where guests sit.
Printing a Wi-Fi code that people will use
Print the code at least 2 by 2 centimeters, larger if people will scan it from across a table, and leave a plain white margin around it. Write the network name and password underneath as well, because some laptops and older phones cannot scan a code and their owners will type the details instead.
Put the code where people already look when they ask for the Wi-Fi: on the counter, the table tent, the welcome sheet in a rental or the meeting room wall. A short line such as 'Scan to join our Wi-Fi' above the code tells people what it does before they lift their phone.
Tips
- Use a separate guest network for the code you print. Anyone who photographs it can join, so keep your main network's password private.
- Network names and passwords are case sensitive. 'CafeGuest' and 'cafeguest' are different networks to a phone.
- If your router offers WPA3 or a mixed WPA2/WPA3 mode, choose WPA here. The WPA value covers WPA, WPA2 and most WPA3 setups.
- When you change the guest password, reprint the code. Old codes keep pointing at the old password and simply fail to connect.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Wi-Fi QR code format?
It is one line of text: WIFI:T:<security>;S:<network name>;P:<password>;; with an optional H:true; for hidden networks. For a WPA network called Cafe Guest with the password latte2026, the text is WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe Guest;P:latte2026;; and both iPhone and Android cameras offer to join when they scan it.
Why does my password have backslashes in it?
Semicolons, commas, colons, double quotes and backslashes have a special meaning in this format, so each one in your network name or password is written with a backslash in front. A password of latte;2026 becomes latte\;2026 in the text. The phone removes the backslash when it joins, so guests never see it.
Which security type should I choose?
Choose WPA for almost every modern router, including WPA2 and WPA3. Choose WEP only for very old equipment, and 'None' for an open network with no password.
Does this tool make the QR image too?
This page builds the text, which is the part most people get wrong. Paste it into the free QR code generator on We.Inc as plain text to make the image, then download it as PNG or SVG for printing.
Is my Wi-Fi password sent anywhere?
No. The text is built in your browser and nothing you type leaves your device.
