Tailwind CSS Colors: The Full Default Palette

Tailwind CSS v4 ships a default palette of named color families, from red and blue to neutrals like slate, zinc and stone, each in 11 shades from 50 (lightest) to 950 (darkest), plus black and white. Version 4 defines every shade in OKLCH as a CSS variable such as --color-blue-500, which you use as bg-blue-500.

Customising colors with @theme

Add brand colors

Variables in the --color- namespace become utilities. Here bg-brand-500 and text-ink start working alongside the defaults.

@import "tailwindcss";

@theme {
  --color-brand-50: oklch(97% 0.02 250);
  --color-brand-500: oklch(62% 0.19 250);
  --color-brand-900: oklch(30% 0.09 250);
  --color-ink: #1b1b1f;
}

Remove families you never use

Setting a namespace to initial drops it. The first line removes one family; the second would remove every default color.

@theme {
  --color-lime-*: initial;
  /* --color-*: initial; */
}

Tinted panel with matching text

A pale background and a dark text shade from one family, plus a border two steps darker than the background.

<div class="rounded-xl border border-emerald-200 bg-emerald-50 p-4 text-emerald-900">
  Your order has shipped.
</div>

Use palette variables in your own CSS

Handy for third-party widgets you cannot add classes to.

.legacy-widget {
  color: var(--color-slate-800);
  border-color: var(--color-slate-200);
  background: var(--color-white);
}

Reading the shade numbers

The number tracks lightness, not saturation. 50 is close to white and 950 close to black, with 500 roughly the pure hue. Because each family follows the same scale, swapping blue-600 for violet-600 keeps a button's contrast about the same.

Neutrals differ only in their undertone: slate leans blue, zinc is slightly cool, neutral has no hue at all and stone is warm. Version 4 adds more tinted neutrals such as mauve, olive, mist and taupe.

Overriding a single shade

Any default can be redefined in @theme by writing the same variable name with a new value. Every utility that uses it picks up the change, which is handy for nudging one shade to match a brand without replacing the family.

Keep overrides rare. The defaults are tuned as a set, and a lone shade from somewhere else can break the even steps between neighbours.

How it works

  1. Choose what a click should copy: a class, a CSS variable, the OKLCH value or a hex code.
  2. For classes, pick the utility prefix such as bg, text or border.
  3. Type part of a name to narrow the families, then click a swatch. The copied text appears under the controls.
  4. Paste the class into your markup, or the variable into your own CSS.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Why are Tailwind v4 colors in OKLCH instead of hex?

Version 4 defines its palette in OKLCH, whose L channel is perceived lightness, so shades can be spaced by how light they look. It also reaches more vivid colors on wide-gamut screens. The oklch() function has worked across major browsers since May 2023, so browsers read the values directly.

How do I add a custom color in Tailwind v4?

Declare a variable in the --color- namespace inside @theme in your CSS, for example --color-midnight: #121063. Tailwind then generates bg-midnight, text-midnight and the rest. No tailwind.config.js entry is needed.

How do I remove default colors I do not use?

Set the family to initial inside @theme, for example --color-lime-*: initial. That removes every lime shade from the generated utilities and variables.

How do I make a color semi-transparent?

Add a slash and an opacity to the class: bg-sky-500/50 for 50%, or an arbitrary value like bg-pink-500/[71.37%]. In your own CSS, the --alpha() function does the same with a variable.

Can I reference a Tailwind color in plain CSS?

Yes. Every palette color is exposed as a CSS variable, so color: var(--color-blue-500) works in any stylesheet that loads Tailwind.
