Game Character Generator

Roll a random character for your game: a name, a look, a personality, an ability, a flaw and a backstory hook, all fitted to the setting and the role you choose. You also get a one-line art prompt you can hand to an artist or an image tool. Type your own value into any trait box to keep it, then reroll everything else. Traits come from lists and templates, so treat each result as a starting sketch.

What you enter

How it works

  1. Choose a setting (fantasy, science fiction, modern, post-apocalyptic or cute) and a role (hero, villain, shopkeeper, boss or sidekick).
  2. Press the button to roll a full character sheet. The name, clothing and ability fit the setting, and the personality and backstory fit the role.
  3. To keep a trait, type it into its box under Keep these traits. Press the button again and only the empty traits change.
  4. Copy the sheet or print it. The last line is an art prompt that joins the traits into one description.

What makes a character work in a game

A game character has to be understood fast. Players meet them in a few seconds of dialogue or a single screen of art, so a clear role, one strong trait and one visible detail do more than a long biography. The sheet this tool makes follows that idea: six short traits are enough to write a first line of dialogue.

The trait that matters most is the flaw. A character with only strengths is a stat block, while a flaw gives them reasons to make choices that surprise the player. Pair the ability and the flaw so that they pull against each other, such as a healer who feels every wound, and you have a character with built-in tension.

From a rolled sheet to a finished character

Use the first roll to find a direction, not to settle. If one trait excites you, lock it and reroll the rest until the others support it. A hero with a cheerful personality and a dark backstory hook reads very differently from one with a stoic personality and the same hook.

Then adapt. Rename the character in your game's naming style, rewrite the ability in your rules, and replace the clothing with what your art can show. A rolled character turns into yours the moment you change a few details to fit your world.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

How does the game character generator work?

It picks one item from a written list for each trait. The name, clothing and ability lists depend on the setting, the personality and backstory lists depend on the role, and the look and flaw lists are shared. The art prompt is the traits joined in a fixed sentence. Results come from templates, so they are building blocks and not finished characters.

How do I keep one trait and reroll the others?

Type the value you want into the matching box under Keep these traits and press the button again. Anything you typed is used as it is, and every empty box is rolled fresh.

What is the art prompt for?

It turns the character into one sentence that describes the role, the name, the appearance and a style. Give it to an illustrator as a brief, or use it in an image tool. Edit it to match your art direction.

Can I use the characters in my game?

Yes. The tool makes no claim on the results, and each one is a mix of common ideas, but check that a name does not match an existing, well-known character before you publish.

Are the results saved?

No. They are made in your browser and are gone when you leave the page, so copy or print what you want to keep.
