Gift Certificate Maker: Printable, With a Unique Code

Type your business name, the amount or service being gifted, who it is for and when it expires, then pick one of three layouts. The maker adds a random redemption code you can log, warns you when a US expiry date looks shorter than the federal five-year minimum, and prints a clean certificate straight from your browser.

Updated

A paper gift certificate is still one of the simplest things a small shop, salon or studio can sell over the counter. The weak spot is usually tracking: two certificates that look the same and no way to tell which one was already spent. This maker gives every certificate its own code, so a simple list of codes is enough to keep you honest.

Build your certificate

Business name: Harbor Street Bakery

Where to redeem (address, phone or website): 12 Harbor Street, 555-0142

Amount: $50

For: Sam. From: Alex

Redemption code: GC-7KQ4-M9TX

Issue date: 2026-10-14

Terms: Not redeemable for cash. Lost certificates cannot be replaced.

Layout: Classic, Band, Minimal

Nothing you type leaves this page.

Print only the certificate from your own site

If you sell certificates on your own website, this stylesheet hides everything except the element with the id fh-print when the visitor prints, which is how this tool prints only the card.

Print one element, hide the rest

visibility keeps the layout of the hidden parts, so the card is moved to the top left with absolute positioning.

@media print {
  body * { visibility: hidden; }
  #fh-print, #fh-print * { visibility: visible; }
  #fh-print { position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; }
  @page { margin: 12mm; }
}

A simple certificate card in HTML

A dashed inner border and a large value are enough to read as a certificate. Edit the text to try your own.

<div style="border:3px double #1f2937;padding:16px;max-width:420px;font-family:Georgia,serif;text-align:center">
  <div style="font-size:13px;letter-spacing:2px;text-transform:uppercase">Harbor Street Bakery</div>
  <div style="font-size:26px;margin:6px 0">Gift Certificate</div>
  <div style="font-size:34px;font-weight:bold">$50</div>
  <div style="font-size:13px;margin-top:8px">For Sam, from Alex</div>
  <div style="font-family:monospace;margin-top:8px">GC-7KQ4-M9TX</div>
</div>

Amount or service: which to sell

A money value is flexible for the buyer and easy to account for, because you simply subtract what is spent. A service certificate feels more like a present and protects you from price rises, but say clearly whether the holder can swap it for something else.

Whatever you choose, decide in advance what happens with leftover balance on a partly used certificate and put that in the terms.

Keeping track without special software

A two-column list is enough: code and value, plus the date sold and the date redeemed. Check the code against the list before you accept a certificate. A photocopy will carry the same code, but only the first one presented gets accepted.

If you take card payments in a point-of-sale app, many of them also sell digital gift cards. Paper certificates from this page work alongside those; just keep them in a separate list.

How it works

  1. Enter your business name and a phone number, address or website where the certificate can be redeemed.
  2. Choose Amount to gift a money value, or Service to gift something specific such as a haircut or a class.
  3. Add the recipient, the giver and the dates. Press New code if you want a different redemption code.
  4. Pick Classic, Band or Minimal and check the preview.
  5. Press Print certificate. In the print dialog choose your printer or Save as PDF.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Can a gift certificate expire?

In the United States, the federal rule for gift certificates sold to consumers (Regulation E, section 1005.20) says the underlying funds may not expire sooner than five years after the certificate was issued, and the expiry date must be disclosed. Some states go further. The rule has exceptions, so read it or ask an adviser. This is not legal advice.

Is the code on the certificate secure?

It is drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator from 31 characters that are hard to misread, so guessing one is impractical. A paper code only protects you if you record it when you sell the certificate and check it off when it is used.

Is anything I type uploaded?

No. The certificate is built and printed inside this page. Nothing is sent to us or saved after you close the tab, so copy your codes into your own records.

How do I make a PDF instead of printing?

Press Print certificate and choose Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows) as the printer. You can then email the PDF to the buyer.

What size does it print at?

It prints at the top left of a letter or A4 sheet, up to about 8 inches wide, and its height follows how much text you add. Trim along the border with scissors or a paper cutter.
