A print shop prints many cards on one big sheet and cuts them apart. The cut is never perfectly on the line, so three zones matter. The trim line is the finished card edge. The bleed is extra background that runs past the trim, usually 1/8 inch (3 mm), so a slightly off cut still shows colour to the edge. The safe zone is a margin inside the trim, also about 1/8 inch, where all text should sit.
Worked example: a US card is 3.5 x 2 inches. With bleed the file is 3.75 x 2.25 inches. Your name and phone number should stay inside a 3.25 x 1.75 inch box in the middle. This tool draws its layouts inside that box and adds crop marks outside the bleed so the shop knows where to cut.
Print shops ask for 300 dpi because that is what a photo needs to look sharp at card size. Everything this tool makes is vector, so it is sharp at any dpi. Ask for 14 pt or 16 pt card stock (about 300 to 350 gsm) with a matte or uncoated finish if you want people to be able to write on the card.
