Hours Calculator

Type the time you started, the time you finished and any unpaid break, and the calculator tells you how long you worked in hours and minutes, in decimal hours for payroll, and, if you add an hourly rate, what the shift pays. Shifts that run past midnight are handled automatically.

How it works

  1. Set the start time and the end time of the shift. Use the clock picker or type the time.
  2. Enter the unpaid break in minutes. Leave it at 0 if there was none.
  3. Add an hourly rate if you want the pay for the shift. Leave it empty to skip it.
  4. Read the total as hours and minutes, and as decimal hours to paste into a timesheet or invoice.

Clock time versus decimal time

Clocks count in sixty, but most pay systems count in hundredths of an hour. That is why a shift that ends at 5:45 pm after starting at 9:00 am is 8.75 hours on a timesheet and not 8.45. Mixing the two is the most common error on handwritten timesheets, and it quietly costs or overpays people.

A quick way to check yourself: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. Any other minute count is the minutes divided by 60, so 10 minutes is 0.17 when rounded to two places.

Breaks, rounding and long shifts

Unpaid meal breaks come off the total, while short paid rest breaks do not. If your employer rounds punches to the nearest quarter hour or tenth of an hour, apply that rounding to the start and end times before you calculate, because rounding the final total can give a different answer.

For shifts that cross midnight the calculator measures from the start time forward to the next occurrence of the end time. That works for any shift under 24 hours. For work that spans several days, add each day on its own and total them.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked between two times?

Convert both times to minutes after midnight, subtract the start from the end, take off the unpaid break, and divide by 60 for decimal hours. For example, 9:00 to 17:30 is 510 minutes. With a 30 minute break that is 480 minutes, which is 8 hours.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the whole hours. 6 hours 20 minutes is 6 + 20 / 60 = 6.33 hours. The other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.25 hours is 15 minutes.

What happens if my shift goes past midnight?

When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the end as the next day and adds 24 hours. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.

What if the start and end time are the same?

The result is zero hours. If you really worked a full 24 hours, enter the end time as one minute earlier and add the minute back by hand.

Is this hours calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, there is nothing to sign up for, and the numbers you type stay in your browser.
