For iPhone, iPad and Mac, Apple asks for one square 1024 x 1024 pixel design and scales it down itself. Android adaptive icons use layers sized 108 x 108 dp, with the logo kept inside the central 66 x 66 dp. Google Play also wants a separate 512 x 512 PNG for the store listing.
| Where | Size | Shape after masking |
|---|---|---|
| iOS, iPadOS, macOS | 1024 x 1024 px | Rounded rectangle |
| watchOS | 1088 x 1088 px | Circle |
| Android adaptive icon layers | 108 x 108 dp | Set by the phone maker |
| Google Play listing icon | 512 x 512 px, max 1024 KB | Applied by Play |

An app icon is drawn once and shown in many places, each with its own shape. The platform cuts your square artwork into that shape, a step called masking. Pick a square image below to see how it survives the common masks and whether its pixel size matches what each store asks for. The image stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Apple's guidelines describe icons as a background layer plus one or more foreground layers, assembled in Icon Composer, a design tool included with Xcode. People can switch their Home Screen icons between default, dark, clear and tinted appearances.
You may design each appearance yourself. If you skip one, Apple says the system generates it from your other artwork.
An adaptive icon is a foreground layer, usually the logo, over a background layer, usually a colour or pattern. Each phone maker supplies the mask shape, so the same app can appear round on one phone and squarish on another.
Google suggests a logo at least 48 x 48 dp that never exceeds the 66 x 66 dp safe zone.
Apple's specification lists a 1024 x 1024 pixel layout for iOS, iPadOS and macOS. The system automatically scales it to the smaller variants used in places such as Settings and notifications.
Android's guide says to size all layers 108 x 108 dp. The inner 66 x 66 dp is never clipped by a device mask, and the outer 18 dp on each side is reserved for masking and motion effects.
Density-independent pixels, Android's unit that stays the same physical size on screens of different sharpness. Your image tools export the matching pixel sizes for each screen density.
512 by 512 pixels, as a 32-bit PNG with alpha, no larger than 1024 KB, according to the Play Console help page.
