How to Add the Pinterest Tag to Your Website

Pinterest's tracking code lives under Business, then Conversions, in your Pinterest business account. Click Get started, then either pick an integration partner or choose manual setup and copy the base code into your site. Add event codes like checkout, lead or signup, and allow up to 24 hours before data appears.

Pinterest users often plan purchases weeks ahead, so the tag matters more for measuring delayed sales than for instant clicks. It also builds audiences of people who visited, for retargeting with Pins later.

Add the Pinterest tag on We.Inc, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or plain HTML

We.Inc

  1. In the builder, go to the "..." menu, then Add-ons.
  2. Pick Pinterest Tag and enter the tag ID from Pinterest's Conversions page.
  3. Toggle it on and wait for the saved message.
  4. Republish your site so the tag starts loading.

WordPress

  1. Check Pinterest's partner list during Get started; if WordPress or WooCommerce is offered, follow that route.
  2. Otherwise install a header code plugin from Plugins, Add Plugin.
  3. Paste the base code into the header field and save.

Plugins on WordPress.com need a paid plan.

Wix

  1. Go to Settings, then Custom Code.
  2. Click + Add Custom Code, paste the Pinterest base code, and set it to load on all pages in the Head.
  3. Click Apply and publish.

Needs a premium Wix plan with a connected domain.

Squarespace

  1. Open Code Injection (Pages panel, Custom Code).
  2. Paste the base code into Header and save.
  3. Put event calls on the individual pages where leads finish, through each page's gear icon, then Advanced.

Code Injection comes with Core, Plus and Advanced plans.

Plain HTML

  1. Paste the base code before </head> on each page.
  2. Add pintrk('track', 'lead') or another event on the success page.
  3. Upload and check Ads Manager the next day.

Events Pinterest understands

Pinterest's event list covers shopping steps (pagevisit, viewcategory, addtocart, checkout) and lead steps (signup, lead, contact, schedule). In code the names are lowercase, for example pintrk('track', 'lead').

Pinterest also offers a Conversions API to send events from a server alongside the tag, for more complete counts when browsers block scripts.

Consent

Treat the Pinterest tag like any ad cookie: hold it back until EU and UK visitors agree. Read /guides/how-to-add-cookie-banner-to-website for setup choices.

How it works

  1. Log in to Pinterest on desktop, open the menu, and click Conversions under Business.
  2. Click Get started and choose a partner integration, email instructions, or Skip for manual code.
  3. Install the base code on every page.
  4. Add event codes on the pages where sales or leads complete.
  5. Check Ads Manager after a day for incoming events.

Tips

  • Use checkout for completed orders only; Pinterest has a separate initiatecheckout event for the start of checkout.
  • Claim your website in Pinterest first; it adds attribution to your Pins and can surface partner install options.
  • Expect a lag: Pinterest says tag changes can take up to 24 hours to show in Ads Manager.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pinterest tag free?

Yes. Creating and installing the tag costs nothing; you only pay for the ads you run.

Can I install the Pinterest tag from my phone?

No. Pinterest's help center says to use a desktop computer for tag installation.

Which event should a service business track?

Use lead for enquiry forms and schedule for confirmed bookings. Both are standard Pinterest events, so they work for campaign optimisation without custom setup.
