Type the name of your site or app, list the tasks you want people to try, and choose how long each session will run. The tool writes a complete usability test script: a welcome to read aloud, warm-up questions, each task with follow-up questions, wrap-up questions and a time plan. Print it or copy it.
A good task gives the participant a reason and a goal, not a path. 'You are planning a trip for four people next month and want to know if there is a family room' lets you see how they look for the information, while 'open the rooms page' only tests whether they can follow instructions. The scenario is what makes the behavior real.
Order the tasks so that the most important one comes first, while the participant is fresh, and so that early tasks do not teach them the answer to later ones. If one task needs the participant to be signed in, put it after the task that tests signing up.
After each task, ask the same three or four questions every time. What were you expecting to happen, was anything confusing, how easy was that on a scale of one to five. Asking the same questions makes the answers comparable across participants, and the rating gives you a number to compare after you make changes.
When the sessions are done, list every problem you saw, count how many participants hit it, and fix the ones that blocked a task before the ones that only annoyed. Test again with new people. The scores from the same questions show whether the changes helped.
It is the document a moderator follows during a session so that every participant gets the same introduction, the same tasks and the same questions. It keeps sessions comparable and stops you from leading people by accident.
The script reserves 15 minutes for the welcome, warm-up and wrap-up, and divides the rest of the session equally between your tasks, rounding down. For a 45 minute session with 3 tasks, 30 minutes remain, which is 10 minutes per task.
Three to five in a 45 minute session is usual. If the time per task falls below about three minutes, the tool warns you, because people have no time to explore and you will rush them.
For finding the main problems in a design, a small group of about five people from your target audience is a common starting point. Run another small round after you fix what you found.
Yes. Ask the participant to share their screen and think aloud, and ask permission before recording. The same script works in person or remotely.
