How to Add Phone and Email Links to Your Website
Two URL schemes do it. A link with href="tel:+14155550123" starts a call when tapped on a phone, and href="mailto:[email protected]" opens the visitor's email app with your address filled in. Write phone numbers in full international format with no spaces inside the href, even if the visible text uses spaces.
| Goal | href value |
|---|---|
| Call a number | tel:+442071234567 |
| Number with extension | tel:+14155550123,123 (comma pauses before dialling) |
| Send an email | mailto:[email protected] |
| Email with subject | mailto:[email protected]?subject=Quote%20request |
| Subject and body | mailto:[email protected]?subject=Hi&body=I%27d%20like%20to%20book |
| Send a text message | sms:+14155550123 |

Click-to-call matters most for local businesses: a large share of visits come from phones, and a number someone must copy by hand loses calls. Mailto links are handy but have a weakness: on desktops without a configured mail app, clicking does nothing useful. Show the address as text too.
Add phone and email links on We.Inc, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or plain HTML
We.Inc
- Tell the AI chat your number and email, for example 'make the phone number in the header tap-to-call and add a mailto link in the footer'.
- Give the number with its country code so the link is written in international format.
- Tap the links in the phone preview to confirm they are links.
- Publish.
The AI edits the page code for these links, using credits on a paid plan. If you would rather avoid exposing the address, ask for a contact form; We.Inc forms email you each submission.
WordPress
- In the block editor, select the text of the number or address.
- Press the Link button (or Ctrl+K / Cmd+K).
- Type tel:+14155550123 or mailto:[email protected] and press Enter.
- Update the page and tap the link on a phone.
Wix
- Select the text or button in the Editor.
- Click the Link icon.
- Choose Phone or Email from the link types and enter the details.
- Publish and test on mobile.
Wix blog posts cannot link phone numbers or emails directly; put them in a text box on the page instead.
Squarespace
- Highlight the text or edit a button block.
- Open the link editor.
- Pick the phone or email option from the link type dropdown, or type tel: or mailto: before the value.
- Save and check on the live site.
Plain HTML
- Wrap the number in <a href="tel:+...">.
- Wrap the email in <a href="mailto:...">.
- Encode spaces and punctuation in subject and body parameters.

Phone, email and text links
The visible text stays friendly while the href carries the machine-readable value.

Phones detect numbers anyway; link them on purpose
iOS Safari turns things that look like numbers into tappable links automatically, which sometimes catches prices or order IDs by mistake. Linking real numbers yourself and adding <meta name="format-detection" content="telephone=no"> stops the guessing.
For WhatsApp, a wa.me link works the same way as tel; our WhatsApp link generator builds one.
How it works
- Write the visible text the way people read it, such as (415) 555-0123.
- Put the full international number in the tel: href, starting with + and the country code.
- For email, add a subject with ?subject= and encode spaces as %20.
- Place the links in the header on mobile and in the footer site-wide.
- Tap each one on a real phone before publishing.
Tips
- Include the country code even for local customers. Visitors roaming abroad, and Wix's own help, note numbers without it may fail.
- Show the email address as visible text, not only 'Email us', so desktop visitors without a mail app can copy it.
- Mailto addresses in plain HTML are easy for spam bots to harvest. A contact form, or our email obfuscator, reduces that.
- Track taps as conversions in your analytics so you can see which pages produce calls.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a phone number link in HTML?
<a href="tel:+14155550123">(415) 555-0123</a>. The href holds the number in international format with no spaces or brackets; the text between the tags can be formatted any way you like.
How do I add a subject line to a mailto link?
Append ?subject= followed by the subject with spaces encoded as %20, for example mailto:[email protected]?subject=Booking%20request. Add &body= for prefilled message text.
What happens when someone clicks a tel link on a computer?
The computer opens whatever app is registered for calls, such as FaceTime on a Mac or a softphone app, or asks the user to pick one. If none exists, nothing happens.
Can I send to multiple email addresses?
Yes. Separate them with commas in the mailto address, or add cc= and bcc= parameters.
