Local Citations for Canadian Businesses: A Practical List | How-to Guide

Where Canadian small businesses should be listed: Google, Apple and Bing, Yellow Pages Canada and Canada411, HomeStars, BBB, provincial registries and bilingual details in Quebec.

Canada borrows from both the American and British directory worlds and adds a few of its own, plus a language question in Quebec and parts of Ontario and New Brunswick. Here is where a Canadian small business should be listed and how to keep those entries in agreement.

The map platforms

Claim Google Business Profile, Apple Business and Bing Places for Business before anything else. Google explains in its Business Profile help that local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Apple Maps answers Siri on every iPhone in the country, and Bing's listings feed Microsoft Copilot. Three accurate map listings will do more for you than thirty directory entries.

Canadian directories

  • Yellow Pages Canada (yellowpages.ca). The main national directory, with a free basic listing. Its data also appears on Canada411.
  • Canada411 and 411.ca. Phone-lookup sites that many older customers still use to find a number.
  • Yelp Canada. Strong in larger cities for food, beauty and some services.
  • Better Business Bureau. BBB operates in Canada through regional bureaus. Claim your profile so the details are correct.

Trade and home-service platforms

HomeStars is the best-known Canadian review platform for contractors, renovators and home services. Many provinces also license trades through public registers: electrical safety authorities, provincial home warranty programs, and in Ontario the Skilled Trades Ontario public register, which lets anyone check an individual's certificate in a compulsory trade. Where a register shows you or your business, check that the name and contact details match your website. Professionals such as lawyers, accountants and clinicians will find their regulator's public directory is one of the most trusted citations they can have.

Provincial business registration

Business names are registered provincially, or federally through Corporations Canada. If your operating name differs from the registered one, state the link on your site so customers and search tools can match them.

French and English

In Quebec, the Charter of the French Language sets rules for the language of commercial signs and publications, and your public listings should respect them. Google Business Profile lets you keep one business name; do not create separate English and French profiles for the same location. Instead, write a bilingual description where that suits your customers and publish your service pages in both languages if you serve both. The point is one business, one set of facts, expressed in the languages your customers read.

Consistent formatting

Canada Post has a preferred address format, including the two-letter province code and a space in the middle of the postal code. Pick that version and use it everywhere. Decide whether you write "Unit 4" or "4-" before the street number and stay with it. If you moved, search your old address and update it on every listing you can find.

Community references

Local chambers of commerce, business improvement areas and community associations publish member lists. These are genuine local connections and often rank well for searches about your town.

Your site is the master copy

Whatever directories say, your own website should hold the correct name, address or service area, phone number, hours and services, in readable HTML. When records conflict, your site should be the easiest place to settle it.

Accurate listings get you on the map; detailed service pages give people reasons to choose you. SEO God Mode drafts those pages for We.Inc sites from your own business facts and emails each draft so you can publish or skip it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I make separate English and French Google profiles?

No. Keep one profile per real location. Use a bilingual description and bilingual pages on your website if you serve customers in both languages.

Is HomeStars worth joining?

For contractors and home-service firms it is the platform many Canadian homeowners check. Read the membership terms and decide whether paid features suit you; a free profile still counts as a citation.

Does Yellow Pages Canada also update Canada411?

Canada411 shows Yellow Pages data, so correcting your record on yellowpages.ca usually flows through. Check both after a change.
