Local Citations for US Businesses: Where to List and Why | How-to Guide
Which listings matter for a small business in the United States, from Google, Apple and Bing to Yelp, BBB, Nextdoor and trade sites, and how to keep name, address and phone identical across them.
A citation is any place online that states your business name, address and phone number. In the United States the list of places that matter is shorter than directory sellers suggest, and most of the value comes from a handful of platforms that feed maps, voice assistants and AI answers.
Start with the three map platforms
Google Business Profile, Apple Business and Bing Places for Business are the foundation. Google's own help pages say local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence draws on information such as links to your business and your reviews. Apple Maps powers Siri and iPhone map searches, so an unclaimed Apple listing is a gap that iPhone owners notice. Bing Places matters beyond Bing itself because Microsoft Copilot reads Bing's data when it answers local questions.
The American second tier
After the map platforms, these are the listings US customers actually read:
- Yelp. Strong for restaurants, salons and home services. Yelp's support pages tell businesses not to ask anyone to review them on Yelp, and warn that prompted reviews may not be recommended, so claim the page and keep it accurate rather than chasing stars there.
- Better Business Bureau. A basic BBB profile exists for many businesses whether or not they are accredited. Claim it so the hours and phone are right.
- Nextdoor. Neighbourhood recommendations carry weight for trades, cleaners and childcare. A free business page lets you respond when neighbours mention you.
- Facebook. Still a place people check hours and photos.
- Your local chamber of commerce. A membership listing is a genuine local reference, not a bulk directory.
Trade and state sources
Many US trades have a vertical platform that customers search directly: Angi and Thumbtack for home services, Houzz for remodelers and designers, Avvo and Justia for lawyers, Healthgrades and Zocdoc for clinicians. Licensed trades should also check the state licensing board lookup, because a mismatch between your licensed business name and your public name confuses both people and machines.
Data aggregators
In the US, several companies supply business data to apps, car navigation systems and smaller directories. Data Axle and Foursquare are two of the best known. You can submit or correct your record with them directly, which tends to fix errors at the source instead of chasing them one site at a time.
Consistency beats volume
Pick one exact format for your name, street address, suite number and phone, then use it everywhere. "Suite 200" on your site and "#200" on Yelp is a small difference, but a phone number that changed two years ago and still sits on twenty listings is a real problem. Before adding new listings, search your old phone numbers and previous addresses and correct what you find.
What not to buy
Packages promising hundreds of directory submissions mostly produce listings on sites no customer visits. They take time to clean up if you move or rebrand, and they add nothing a human would find useful. A short, accurate list maintained twice a year does more.
Make your own site the reference copy
Every listing should agree with your website. Put your full address (or service area), phone, hours and services on a page that crawlers can read in the HTML. When a directory, a map app or an AI assistant is unsure which version is right, your site is where the correct answer should be easy to confirm.
Once the listings agree, the next gains come from pages that describe your services in detail. SEO God Mode suggests weekly topics drawn from the services on your We.Inc site and drafts up to two posts a week for you to publish or skip.
Frequently asked questions
How many citations does a US small business need?
There is no target number. Cover the three map platforms, the review sites your customers actually use, your trade platform and your local chamber, and keep them identical.
Can I ask customers to review me on Yelp?
Yelp's support pages tell businesses not to ask anyone, customers included, to review them on Yelp. Claim your page, keep it accurate and reply to reviews, but point your review requests at Google instead.
What is a data aggregator?
A company that collects business records and supplies them to apps, navigation systems and directories. Correcting your record with one can fix errors on many downstream sites.
