Email List Syntax Checker

Paste a list of email addresses, separated by commas, semicolons or new lines, and get back a clean list with badly formed addresses and duplicates removed. The tool also spots likely typos in common domains such as gmial.com and hotmial.com, and counts role addresses like info@ and noreply@. It checks the format of each address only. It cannot tell whether a mailbox exists, and it does not contact any mail server.

What you get

How it works

  1. Paste your addresses into the box. One per line works, and so do commas, semicolons or a line copied from a spreadsheet column. Entries like Jane Doe <[email protected]> are understood.
  2. Choose what to do with likely typos: fix them with the suggested domain, remove them or keep them as typed. Tick the box to drop role addresses too.
  3. Read the counts, then the table of rejected and flagged addresses with the reason for each.
  4. Copy the clean list or download it as a text file, then check the flagged rows before you send.

Format checking and what it leaves out

An email address has two parts joined by an @ sign: a local part that names the mailbox and a domain that names the mail host. The rules for each part are strict enough to catch most copy and paste mistakes, such as a missing @, a space, a doubled dot or a domain without an ending.

Format rules cannot catch the other common failures. An address can be perfectly formed and still point to a mailbox that was closed last year, a domain that never accepted mail or a typo that happens to be a real domain. Think of the syntax check as the first filter, which removes the junk that would bounce at once.

Why a clean list matters before a send

Mailbox providers watch how many of your messages bounce. A high bounce rate suggests you collected addresses carelessly, and it can push later messages to the spam folder, including ones sent to good addresses. Removing impossible addresses and obvious typos before you send is the cheapest way to protect your sending reputation.

Deduplicating helps for a different reason. Sending the same message twice to one person looks careless and raises complaints. Lower-casing before comparing means [email protected] and [email protected] count as the same person, which is how nearly every mail system treats them in practice.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool check that the mailbox exists?

No. It checks only that each address is shaped like a valid email address. Whether the domain accepts mail, or the mailbox is real and not full, can only be learned by contacting the mail server or by sending a message, and this tool does neither.

What counts as a badly formed address?

One with no @ sign or more than one, nothing before or after the @, spaces, characters that are not allowed, a dot at the start or end of the name part, two dots in a row, a domain with no dot, a domain label that starts or ends with a hyphen, or a last part that is not a plausible domain ending. Addresses with non-English letters are rejected, because many mail systems still cannot handle them.

How does the typo detection work?

The domain is compared with a built-in list of common misspellings, such as gmial.com, hotmial.com and yaho.com, and with common mistyped endings such as .con and .cmo. The tool only suggests a fix for known misspellings. It will not guess at an unusual company domain.

Why are role addresses flagged?

Names such as info, admin, support, sales, billing and noreply usually reach several people or nobody. They are counted so you can decide whether to keep them. They are not an error.

Is my list uploaded?

No. The list is cleaned in your browser and never sent to a server.
