Mobile App Terms of Service Template

Type your app and company name, say whether the app has accounts, paid plans or user-posted content, and set a minimum age, and the tool writes a plain-language terms of service draft with only the sections that apply. It is a starting point, not legal advice. Copy it, download it or print it, and have it checked before you publish.

What you enter

What you get

How it works

  1. Enter the app name, the company name, the place whose laws should apply and a contact email.
  2. Switch on accounts, paid plans or user-posted content if your app has them, and set the minimum age.
  3. Read the draft. Sections that do not apply to your app are left out, and the rest are numbered in order.
  4. Copy, download or print the draft, then edit it to match what your app really does. The page does not store your answers.

What terms of service are for

Terms of service are an agreement between you and the people who use your app. They say what users may and may not do, who owns what, what happens when an account is closed and how far your responsibility goes if something fails. They also set out which place's law applies and who to contact.

Good terms protect both sides. For users, they explain the rules and their rights in language they can read. For you, they set expectations, give you a basis to remove abusive accounts and limit what you promise. They work best when they match how the app really behaves.

Choosing the sections that apply

Each feature adds a topic the terms should cover. Accounts add rules about login details and responsibility. Paid plans add how prices are shown, how renewals work and how refunds are handled, and these usually depend on the app store or payment provider. User content adds who owns what people post, what you may do with it and what you may remove.

Leaving out sections you do not need keeps the document short enough to read. If you add a feature later, such as subscriptions or comments, come back, switch the matching section on and update the date. Review the whole document at least once a year, and whenever the app changes in a way users would care about.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this legal advice?

No. This is a starting point, not legal advice. It is a template with standard clauses, and it does not know your app, your users or the laws where you operate. Have a qualified lawyer review it, especially if your app takes payments, serves children, handles sensitive data or operates in several countries.

What is the difference between terms of service and a privacy policy?

Terms of service set the rules for using the app: who can use it, what is allowed, payments and what happens if something goes wrong. A privacy policy explains what personal data you collect and what you do with it. Most apps need both.

Which sections does this draft include?

Nine sections are always included: agreeing to the terms, who can use the app, acceptable use, ownership, ending use, disclaimers and liability, changes, governing law and contact. Account, paid plan and user content sections are added only when you switch them on, giving between 9 and 12 sections.

What age should I set?

It depends on your app and on the laws that apply to it. Rules for children's data are strict in many places. Set the age that matches your audience and what your privacy policy says, and check the rule with a professional.

Do I have to publish terms of service?

Rules differ by place and by app store, and many apps with accounts or payments have them. Ask a professional what applies to you. Having clear terms also tells users what to expect and gives you something to point to.
