Click the map or search for your town to set the centre, choose a radius in miles or kilometres, and add more circles if you serve more than one base. Type the towns or ZIP codes you cover, then download a PNG of the map and copy an HTML snippet for a Service areas section. The map uses OpenStreetMap tiles. Place searches go to the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service only when you press Search; nothing else you type leaves your browser.
A lawn care business based in Naperville, Illinois mows within 12 miles and does larger landscaping jobs within 25. Search for Naperville, set the first circle to 12 miles, add a second circle at the same centre with 25 miles and a lighter colour.
In the town list, write Naperville, Aurora, Lisle, Warrenville and Bolingbrook under mowing, and add the wider towns with a note that landscaping only is offered there. The PNG and the list go into a Service areas section, and customers can check both in seconds.
The map is made of 256 pixel square tiles in the Web Mercator projection, the same system most online maps use. At zoom level z the world is 256 times 2 to the power z pixels wide, and one pixel covers about 156,543 metres times the cosine of the latitude, divided by 2 to the power z.
That is why the tool works out the circle size from the latitude: 10 miles covers more pixels in Oslo than in Miami at the same zoom level.
Yes. There is no signup and no API key. The map tiles and place search come from OpenStreetMap's public services, which are free to use within their usage policies.
The circle uses the map's own Web Mercator scale at your centre's latitude, so the radius is correct at the centre and very close across a local service area. It is a straight-line distance, not a driving distance.
OpenStreetMap data is free under the Open Database License, which asks everyone who shows it to credit the contributors. The tool puts the credit on the map, on the PNG and in the HTML snippet.
Yes. Download the PNG, upload it to your site, and paste the HTML snippet, replacing the image address with where you uploaded it. The snippet includes your town list and the attribution link.
The PNG is drawn from the map tiles in your browser. If a tile could not be loaded, for example on a blocked network, the export stops rather than giving you a broken image. Try again after the map has fully loaded.
Your search text is sent to the Nominatim service only when you press Search, as their API requires. We.Inc does not store it. Your circles and town list stay in your browser.
A clear list of the areas you serve helps customers and gives search engines text to understand where you work. It does not replace a Google Business Profile, where you can also set a service area.
