How to Show Up in "Near Me" Searches | How-to Guide
What actually happens when someone types "near me" into Google or a map app, why stuffing the phrase into your site does not help, and the listings and page details that do.
"Near me" is not a keyword you can win by repeating it. When someone types it, the search engine swaps the phrase for the searcher's own location and then looks for businesses that match the rest of the query. The work is to be a clear match, nearby, with good reputation.
How the phrase is handled
Google's help page on local ranking explains that when a searcher does not name a place, it calculates distance from what it knows about their location. "Dentist near me" becomes, in effect, "dentist" plus wherever the phone is. Apple Maps and Bing behave the same way. So the words "near me" on your page carry very little weight. What matters is the service word ("dentist") and your real location.
Do not stuff the phrase
Pages titled "Best Plumber Near Me | Plumber Near Me Today" read badly and fall under what Google's spam policies call keyword stuffing. Write for the person instead: "Emergency plumber in Sheffield, open 24 hours".
Be listed where "near me" is answered
- Google Business Profile. The main source for Google Search and Maps. Verify it, choose a precise primary category and add your services.
- Apple Business. Controls your place card in Apple Maps and Siri on iPhones.
- Bing Places for Business. Feeds Bing, Microsoft's maps and Copilot.
Keep the name, phone and hours identical across all three.
Match the service words people use
Someone searching "emergency vet near me" wants a clinic that says it does emergencies and when. If your profile category is just "Veterinarian" and your site never says "emergency", you are a weak match. List each real service as its own item on your profile, and give the main ones their own page on your website.
Open now matters
Many near me searches are urgent. Google's local ranking help lists business hours, including special hours, as part of the complete information it wants. Correct opening hours, including holiday hours, stop you losing customers who would otherwise call.
Reputation and proximity
When several businesses match equally well, reviews and general prominence help decide. Google says review count and rating play a part. Ask happy customers to leave a review, and reply to them. You cannot change distance, so accept that your strongest area is around your real address.
Help mobile visitors act fast
Most near me searches happen on phones. When they click through to your site, the phone number should be one tap away, the address should open in maps and the page should load quickly. A visitor who cannot find the number in five seconds goes back to the list.
Voice assistants count too
People also ask Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa for the nearest locksmith while driving. Those answers come from the same map listings, usually read aloud as one or two names. There is no separate voice setup to do; an accurate, complete listing with good reviews is what gets read out.
Checking your visibility
Search from a few different spots in your area, or ask customers to send a screenshot of what they see. The Performance section of your Business Profile shows how many calls, direction requests and website clicks you get, which tells you more than any single search.
Clear pages about each service are what search engines compare against the words before "near me". SEO God Mode drafts those pages from your own business facts and checks them before they reach your inbox.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put "near me" in my page titles?
No. Search engines replace the phrase with the searcher's location, so it adds little and can read as keyword stuffing.
Why does a business further away show above me?
Distance is one factor among three. A better match for the service or a stronger reputation can outweigh a short difference in distance.
Do near me searches use Apple Maps too?
Yes. On iPhones, Siri and Apple Maps answer them using Apple's own place data, which you manage through Apple Business.
