Open a blank Google Doc, insert a table for your line items, then add your business details, the customer, a unique invoice number, the dates, a description of the work, the amounts and the total owed. Faster still: fill in the builder below, press Copy for Google Docs, and paste the finished invoice into your Doc.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| A unique identification number | INV-0042 |
| Your business name, address and contact details | Maple Lane Design, [email protected] |
| The customer's name and address | Northside Dental, 8 Pine Road |
| A clear description of what you are charging for | Logo design, two rounds of changes |
| The supply date and the invoice date | Work done Oct 10; invoiced Oct 15, 2026 |
| The amounts charged, any VAT or sales tax, and the total owed | $900 + 8% tax = $972 |
Updated
Google Docs is free, already open in most browsers and easy to share as a PDF, which is why so many freelancers and small shops bill from it. The weak point is the arithmetic: a Doc does not add up a table for you. The builder on this page does the sums, then hands you a clean table that pastes straight into a Doc.

These are the menu paths Google's own help pages give, as of October 2026. Menu names can differ slightly in other languages.
| Task | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Start from a template | Template Gallery (top right of the Docs home), or File, New, From a template |
| Add the line item table | Insert, Table, then choose the grid size |
| Add a row | Right-click a cell, Insert row below |
| Reuse last month's invoice | File, Make a copy |
| Export to send | File, Download, then choose a file type |
This is roughly what the Copy button places on your clipboard. Edit it to see the change; Google Docs turns the table into a native Docs table when you paste.
Plain table markup with right-aligned money columns. Docs keeps the rows, columns and bold text.

Start a blank document and type your business name as a heading, with your address, email and phone underneath. Below that, write INVOICE, the number, the invoice date and the due date.
Add a Bill to block with the customer's name and address. Then use Insert, Table and pick a grid four columns wide: Description, Qty, Unit price and Amount. Right-click a cell and choose Insert row below whenever you need another line.
Finish with Subtotal, Tax and Total lines under the table, then your payment terms. Use File, Make a copy for each new invoice so the layout stays the same every time.
Each invoice needs its own number. A running sequence with the year in front (2026-001, 2026-002) sorts neatly in Drive and makes a missing invoice easy to notice.
Keep a simple log of number, client, amount and date paid in a spreadsheet. When a client asks about an invoice, the number takes you straight to it.
Google's help page explains how to open the Template Gallery (top right of the Docs home screen) or use File, New, From a template. Which templates appear changes over time and between account types, so look there first; if no invoice suits you, the builder on this page gives you one to paste in.
No. A table in Docs holds text, not formulas, so totals must be worked out elsewhere. The builder here does the sums before you paste, and if you change a price later you can update the builder and paste again.
Google's help page says to open the file, choose File, then Download, then pick a file type. PDF is the usual choice for invoices. You can also choose File, Print and set the destination to Save as PDF.
Google's table help says tables can be as large as 20 x 20 cells. That is plenty for one invoice; if you have more than about 18 line items, group them or attach a separate list.
No. The builder runs inside this page only. Copy or print the invoice before closing the tab, because the fields reset when you leave.
