A website builder is a service that lets you create and publish a website without writing code yourself. You pick or generate a design, change the text and images in an editor, and press publish. Most builders also bundle the hosting, so the site lives on their servers.
How website builders put a site together
Under the hood, every builder still produces HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The difference is how you get there. There are three broad styles:
- Template and block editors. You start from a template and add sections such as a gallery or contact form. Wix, Squarespace and Webflow work this way, with Webflow exposing more layout detail.
- CMS-based setups. WordPress is a CMS rather than a builder in the strict sense, but page-building plugins and the block editor give it similar editing.
- AI builders. You describe the business in plain language and the tool generates pages, which you then refine by chat or by clicking elements. Some, We.Inc among them, generate actual React and TypeScript code that can be exported.
An electrician's site in a template builder
An electrician needs a site with services, service area, photos of past work and a quote form. In a template builder, they choose a trades layout, replace the sample text, upload photos, connect a domain name and publish. The builder handles the server, the SSL certificate and mobile layout. The trade-off is that layout options and integrations are limited to what the platform supports.
When a builder is the right tool
For most small businesses whose site is mainly information, a gallery and a contact form, a builder is faster and cheaper than custom development. Hiring a developer makes more sense when you need unusual functionality, complex integrations with other systems, or full control over hosting and data.
Things to check before committing
- Getting your content out. Some platforms make leaving hard. Find out whether you can export pages, blog posts or code.
- Domain ownership. Register the domain in your own name so you can move it later.
- Total cost. Compare the plan you actually need, including e-commerce, extra storage or removing branding, not only the entry price.
- SEO basics. Confirm you can edit page titles, meta descriptions, URLs and image alt text.
- Mobile preview. Check every page on a real phone before publishing.
