Ad Copy Generator

Fill in a few facts about what you sell: the product or service, the main benefit, who it is for, the offer and the city. You get a set of ad headlines, descriptions and calls to action built from common ad formulas. Set the character limits of your ad platform and any line that is too long is left out and counted.

How it works

  1. Enter the product or service and its main benefit. Add the audience, the offer and the city if they apply.
  2. Pick a tone: direct, friendly, urgent or premium. It changes the extra formulas and the calls to action.
  3. Set the headline and description limits from your ad platform's current rules. The starting values are common figures, but platforms change them.
  4. Copy the lines you like. Headlines that would be too long are dropped, and the tool tells you how many.

The parts of a good ad

Most effective short ads contain four things: who it is for, what they get, why now and what to do. Space is tight, so each part may be only a few words. A headline that names the product and the benefit, a description that adds the offer, and a call to action cover all four.

Specifics beat adjectives. '20% off your first visit' is something a person can act on, while 'amazing savings' is something they ignore. If you have a price, a time, a place or a number that is true, use it.

Writing within tight limits

Short limits force choices. Cut filler words first, then drop adjectives that do not carry meaning, and only then shorten the facts. A headline of 30 characters has room for about five words, so one clear idea is all it can hold.

Use different headlines for different jobs. One can say the benefit, one the offer, one the place and one the audience. When the platform mixes them, the combinations should still make sense together, so avoid headlines that repeat each other.

Testing and improving

Change one thing at a time. If you swap the headline, the offer and the call to action together, you will not know which change made the difference. Run the test long enough to collect a fair number of views and clicks before you decide.

Look past clicks. An ad that gets many clicks but no enquiries may promise something the page does not deliver. Compare the result you want, such as calls or sign-ups, across ads, and keep the one that produces it at the lowest cost.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

What are the character limits for ads?

They differ between platforms and change over time, so the limits here are boxes that you set yourself. Check your platform's current ad specifications. The tool drops any headline or description that is longer than the number you enter.

How are the ads written?

From templates. Your facts are placed into formulas such as benefit plus offer, a question, an urgent call or a local line. A formula is skipped if it needs a fact that you left empty, so the more you fill in, the more lines you get.

Why did I get fewer headlines than expected?

Either you left some boxes empty, so formulas that need them were skipped, or the filled-in headlines were longer than your limit. The result shows how many were dropped for length. Shorter product and benefit phrases give more headlines.

Are the ads ready to run?

They are drafts. Check each line for accuracy, make sure the offer and claims are true, and check your platform's advertising policies. Some industries have extra rules about what you can say.

What is a call to action?

A short instruction that tells the reader what to do next, such as 'Get a quote' or 'Book online'. Ads with a clear next step usually do better than ads that leave the reader to guess.
