Image Alt Text Generator for Business Websites

Add your images, say what each one shows and what it is doing on the page. The tool writes alt text that fits the purpose: empty alt for decorative images, the destination for images that are links, and a short factual description for images that carry information. It does not look inside your pictures or guess who or where they are; you confirm each line before exporting. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type or upload is sent to We.Inc or anyone else.

How it works

  1. Drop in images (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or SVG, up to 20 at 10 MB each) or add rows without images. Thumbnails are shown only in your browser.
  2. Describe the page the images sit on, for example "Plumber in Leeds, bathroom installation service page".
  3. For each image, choose its purpose: informative (shows something the visitor needs), functional (it is a link or button) or decorative (adds nothing a visitor would miss).
  4. Write what the image shows in a few words. Add a detail only you know, such as the product name or the job location, if it matters.
  5. Review the suggestion. The tool warns about filler like "image of", text over 125 characters, repeated alt text and file names used as alt text.
  6. Tick Confirmed on each line, then copy the HTML or download a CSV of file name, purpose and alt text.

Purpose decides the alt text

The same photo needs different alt text in different places. A photo of a kitchen on a home page hero may be decorative; as the only image of a finished project on a portfolio page it is informative; wrapped in a link to the kitchens page it is functional and should name the destination.

That is why the tool asks for the page and the purpose before suggesting anything. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative's alt decision tree uses the same questions.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool describe my image automatically?

No. It does not analyse the picture. Automatic descriptions often guess wrong about people, places and products, and wrong alt text is worse than none. You say what the image shows; the tool turns that into alt text that fits the image's purpose and checks it.

When should alt text be empty?

When the image is decorative: a background pattern, a divider, or a photo that repeats what the text next to it already says. Use alt="" so screen readers skip it.

How long should alt text be?

As short as possible while still doing the job, usually under 125 characters. Put longer detail, such as chart data, in the page text.

Does alt text help SEO?

It helps search engines understand images and can help them appear in image search. Its main job is accessibility; write it for people and the search benefit follows.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are read by your browser to show a thumbnail and never leave your device.
