Paste rows copied from a spreadsheet, a CSV file or an existing Markdown table, and get a clean Markdown table with every column lined up. Choose the alignment, decide whether the first row is the header, and copy the result into a README, a doc page or a blog post. You can also make an empty table of any size to fill in by hand. The tool does not show a rendered preview; the text you copy is what your Markdown viewer will draw.
Markdown was designed to be readable as plain text, and tables are the one place where that goal strains. Every cell has to sit between pipes on one line, so there is no way to include a paragraph or a list in a cell. If you have long text, a table is the wrong tool; use a heading with a short paragraph under it for each item instead.
Padding the columns so they line up makes the source file readable and makes changes show up cleanly in a code review. A change to one cell then shows as a one-line difference. The cost is that a longer cell forces a rewrite of the whole column, which is why a generator saves time.
Copying from a spreadsheet gives plain text with tabs between cells and line breaks between rows, which the tool reads directly. Copying from a web page table often works too, although merged cells and hidden columns can leave gaps that you will need to fix by hand.
A CSV file opened in a text editor works the same way. If a value contains a comma, it should be wrapped in double quotes, and the tool respects that, so a cell like "Smith, Jane" stays in one column. If your numbers use a comma as the decimal mark, export with semicolons as separators and choose the semicolon option.
The first line holds the header cells between pipes. The second line is a separator of hyphens, one group per column, which also sets alignment. Every following line is a row. A minimal table is | A | B |, then | --- | --- |, then | 1 | 2 |.
Colons in the separator row set the alignment: :--- is left, :-: is centre and --: is right. With no colons the renderer uses its default, which is left for most. The tool also pads the cells to match, so the plain text looks aligned too.
Yes. If the first line starts with a pipe, the tool reads it as a Markdown table, drops the old separator row and rebuilds the whole table. This is a quick way to realign a table after you have edited its cells by hand.
Short rows are filled with empty cells so every row has as many columns as the widest one. Nothing is cut off.
A column is treated as numeric when every non-empty cell below the header is a number, optionally with a sign, a currency symbol, thousands commas, a decimal part or a percent sign. Examples are 12, -3.5, $1,200 and 40%.
