A gift shop pastes three lines: Ceramic mug at $6.80, Tote bag at $4.15 and Greeting card at $1.10. With a 120% markup the raw prices are $14.96, $9.13 and $2.42. With .99 rounding they become $14.99, $9.99 and $2.99.
The table shows the real margin after rounding: 54.6% on the mug, 58.5% on the tote and 63.2% on the card. The card gains most from rounding, which is worth knowing before you print the price tags.
If you set a target margin instead, say 55%, each cost is divided by 0.45: the mug becomes $15.11 raw and $15.99 rounded. Targeting a margin keeps your share of each sale steady across cheap and expensive products, which makes monthly planning easier.
Subtract the cost from the selling price, divide by the cost and multiply by 100. A $20 item sold for $32 has a $12 profit and a 60% markup.
Divide the markup by 100 plus the markup. A 60% markup is 60 divided by 160, which is a 37.5% margin. To go the other way, divide the margin by 100 minus the margin: a 37.5% margin is 37.5 divided by 62.5, a 60% markup.
One product per line with the name, then the cost, separated by a comma, tab or semicolon. Put names that contain commas in double quotes. A first line with the word cost or price is treated as a header and skipped.
Each price is raised to the next price ending in .99. $18.25 becomes $18.99 and $19.00 becomes $19.99. The tool never rounds down, so the margin on each line stays at or above your target.
