URL Slug Generator

Type or paste a page or blog post title and get a clean slug, the readable last part of a web address. The tool lower-cases the text, removes accents and punctuation, can drop filler words such as the and of, and trims the result to a length you choose at a whole word. Paste one title per line to make a whole batch, and see the full example address with your own domain in front.

What you get

How it works

  1. Enter a title, or one title per line for a batch.
  2. Choose the separator (a dash is the standard for web addresses), set the maximum length and tick 'Remove filler words' if you want shorter slugs.
  3. Optionally type your address start, such as https://example.com/blog/, to see the full link.
  4. Copy a slug, or copy them all. Use the finished slug as the page's address in your site builder or CMS.

What makes a good slug

A slug is read by people before it is read by machines. It shows in the address bar, in search results and in the previews of chat apps, so it should tell someone what to expect from the page. Plain words beat codes and numbers, and a handful of words beat a long phrase.

Consistency matters as much as the wording. If every post on a site follows the same pattern, lower case with dashes and no dates, then links are easy to guess, easy to type and easy to keep tidy as the site grows. Decide on the pattern once and apply it to everything.

Characters to avoid in addresses

Web addresses may contain only a limited set of characters, and anything else is replaced by a percent code such as %20 for a space. Spaces, accents and symbols in a slug end up as long strings of codes that are hard to read and easy to break when someone copies the link. Plain letters, digits and dashes never need encoding.

Capital letters are a quieter risk. Some web servers treat /About and /about as two different pages, which can split your traffic or produce a not-found error. Writing every slug in lower case removes the question altogether, and is why this tool does it for you.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

It is the human-readable part of a web address that identifies one page. In https://example.com/blog/how-to-fix-a-flat-tyre the slug is how-to-fix-a-flat-tyre. A good slug is lower case, uses words separated by dashes and describes the page.

How does the tool create the slug?

It lower-cases the title, replaces letters such as é, ü and ß with plain a to z letters, turns & into 'and', deletes apostrophes, replaces any other punctuation or spaces with the separator, optionally removes filler words, and then cuts the result at the last whole word that fits the length limit.

Which words does 'remove filler words' take out?

Short, common words such as a, an, and, the, of, for, in, to, is, with, how, what and your. If removing them would leave nothing, the tool keeps the original words. Remove them when you want a shorter slug, and keep them when they carry the meaning, as in 'how to' guides.

What happens to non-Latin text such as Arabic or Chinese?

Slugs here use the letters a to z and digits 0 to 9, so characters from other alphabets are dropped. If a title has no usable letters or digits, the tool tells you instead of returning an empty slug. Write the slug by hand, or transliterate the title first.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The slugs are made in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
