Website Design Cost: What You Should Pay (and Why)

Website design cost in September 2026: $0 to $300 for a template, $1,000 to $5,000 with a freelancer, $5,000 to $30,000+ with an agency. Pricing models, what each tier includes and how to judge a quote.

Short answer (updated September 19, 2026): website design costs $0 to $300 if you use a template, $1,000 to $5,000 for a freelance designer on a typical small business site, and $5,000 to $30,000 or more with an agency. The price follows two things: how original the design is, and how much else (copy, strategy, build) is bundled in.

Build your designed website. Start free with a template site and publish it on a we.inc address, no card. Or describe your business in one prompt and the We.Inc AI builder drafts the whole site, on paid plans from $20/mo. This guide explains the pricing models designers use, what you get at each price level, and how to tell whether a quote is fair.

Established agency$15,000 to $50,000+Research, brand work, design system, many templates2 to 6 months

Ranges reflect published agency price pages and freelance marketplace listings in 2026. They are wide on purpose: a single designer in a lower-cost region may deliver custom work at the bottom of the freelancer range, and a well-known studio may start at the top of the agency range.

Website design pricing models

Designers charge in three main ways. Knowing which one you are being offered helps you compare quotes.

Hourly

Common for small changes and for freelancers early in their careers. Rates vary widely; freelance web designers commonly list $30 to $150 an hour on marketplaces such as Upwork, and agency blended rates tend to sit between $100 and $250. Hourly is fair for small, uncertain jobs and risky for large ones, because the total is open-ended.

Fixed project price

The most common model for full sites. You agree a scope (pages, revisions, deliverables) and a single price. It protects your budget, as long as the scope is written down clearly. Anything outside it becomes a change request at extra cost.

Monthly subscription

A growing option: a set monthly fee covers design, hosting and a number of edits, often with a 12-month minimum. Prices typically run $100 to $400 a month. It spreads the cost, but over two or three years it can cost more than a fixed-price build. We explain the model in website as a service.

What drives website designing cost

The number of pages matters less than people expect. These factors matter more:

  1. Unique templates. A site with 30 pages that share three layouts is cheaper to design than a site with 8 pages that all look different.
  2. Brand work. If you have no logo, colors or type choices, the designer has to create them first. A basic logo and style guide can add $300 to $3,000.
  3. Copywriting. Many quotes assume you supply the words. Professional copy commonly adds $100 to $300 a page.
  4. Revisions. Two rounds is typical. Unlimited revisions usually means a higher base price.
  5. Special features. Store, booking, calculators, member areas and animations all add design and build time.
  6. Accessibility and performance targets. Designing to meet WCAG contrast rules and fast load times is good practice, and a thorough designer prices it in.

Is a cheap website design worth it?

Sometimes. A $500 design built on a solid template can serve a local business well for years. The risk with the low end is not usually ugliness; it is what is missing. Watch for:

A higher price is justified when the site is a main sales channel and the design has to persuade, not just inform. For a restaurant menu and a phone number, it rarely is.

Doing the design yourself in 2026

Two things have changed what DIY design looks like. Templates have become far more polished, and AI builders now produce a first design from a description. On We.Inc you type something like "a website for a family dental clinic in Leeds with online booking" and get a designed, multi-page site with written copy, which you can then change by clicking or asking in chat. The free plan publishes on a we.inc address; the Starter plan at $20 a month adds your own domain. You can browse finished starting points in the templates gallery.

This does not replace a good designer for a distinctive brand. It does mean you can see a working version of your site before paying anyone, which makes you a much better buyer if you do hire help later.

How to judge a website design quote

Ask for these in writing:

QuestionWhy it matters
How many pages and unique layouts? The main driver of design time
How many revision rounds?Extra rounds are billed separately
Is copywriting included?Often the largest hidden cost
Who owns the design files and the domain? You should own both
Which platform will it be built on?Decides your hosting and maintenance costs
What happens after launch?Support period, care plan price, edit rates

Then compare the quote with our website cost calculator. If it is far above, the difference is usually strategy, copy or custom features. Decide whether you need them.

If you sell website design

If you are on the other side, pricing your own design work, see how much to charge for a website and the freelance rate calculator. Designers who host client sites can cut their per-site platform cost with a white-label builder: We.Inc's Lite plan is $99 a month for 25 client sites on your own domain.

The bottom line

Pay for design in proportion to what the site has to do. A template or AI-generated design at $0 to $300 is enough for many small businesses. A freelancer at $1,000 to $5,000 is the sweet spot for a custom look. Agency budgets from $5,000 upward make sense when the website carries real sales weight.
